Galbanum Oil is an intensely green, fresh, earthy and balsamic essential oil steam distilled from the gum resin of Ferula gummosa (also known as Ferula galbaniflua), a tall plant of the carrot family. It is famous in perfumery for its powerful "green" note, like freshly crushed leaves or green peppers, and it is one of the key materials behind many classic green fragrances.
Arizone International supplies Galbanum Oil and resinoid for perfumers, fragrance houses and speciality cosmetic and aromatherapy brands.
About Galbanum
Galbanum comes from Ferula plants that grow wild on the dry mountain slopes of Iran, and to a lesser extent Afghanistan and Turkey. Iran is the main source. Collectors cut the stem or root crown, and a milky resin oozes out and hardens into tears. This resin is then steam distilled to produce the essential oil or extracted to make a resinoid.
Galbanum has a very long history. It was one of the four ingredients of the sacred incense described in the Book of Exodus, and it was used in ancient Egypt in embalming and in perfume. In India, a related Ferula species, Ferula asafoetida, gives hing (asafoetida), which has a much more sulphurous smell.
Aroma and Composition
- Beta-Pinene and Alpha-PineneUsually the main components, giving freshness.
- Delta-3-Carene and MyrceneAdding a green, resinous character.
- Undecatrienes and PyrazinesPresent in tiny amounts but extremely powerful, giving the characteristic intense green, green-pepper note.
Because of these trace compounds, galbanum is extremely diffusive. Even a drop can dominate a blend, so it is used in very small amounts.
Applications
- Fine perfumery, especially green, chypre and floral-green fragrances
- Classic green perfume accords
- Natural perfumes and botanical fragrances
- Incense and resin blends
- Aromatherapy blends, in small amounts
- Speciality soaps and cosmetics
Blending Tips
Galbanum blends well with hyacinth, violet leaf, narcissus, iris, rose, jasmine, oakmoss, pine and frankincense. It adds a natural, green freshness to floral and woody compositions.
Safety and Dilution
Galbanum Oil should be diluted before skin contact. Like other oils rich in pinenes, it can oxidise over time and become more likely to irritate skin, so store it properly. A patch test is recommended. Not for internal use. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children. Use within IFRA standards and local regulations.
Quality Parameters
- Botanical identity (Ferula gummosa)
- Gas chromatography profile
- Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation
- Aroma evaluation against reference samples
- Screening for adulteration with turpentine or synthetic green notes
Packaging and Storage
Supplied in aluminium or amber glass bottles. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place, away from air.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Galbanum is intensely green, so pre-dilute it to 1% or 10% before adding it to perfume trials. A trace amount brings freshness to florals such as hyacinth, iris and rose, and helps a blend smell more natural.
