Fir Needle Oil
Part of our Oils range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Fir Needle Oil is a fresh, clean, balsamic and forest-like essential oil steam distilled from the needles and small twigs of fir trees. The main commercial types are Siberian fir (Abies sibirica), balsam fir (Abies balsamea) and silver fir (Abies alba). It is used in aromatherapy, bath and sauna products, soaps, household products and perfumery.
Arizone International supplies Fir Needle Oil for aromatherapy brands, spa and sauna product makers, soap and household product manufacturers, and fragrance companies.
About Fir Trees
Fir trees are tall evergreen conifers of the pine family that grow in cool mountain and northern forests. Siberian fir grows across Russia and is the main source of fir needle oil. Balsam fir is native to Canada and the northern United States and is well known as a Christmas tree. Silver fir grows in the mountains of central and southern Europe. In India, the Himalayan silver fir (Abies pindrow) grows at high altitudes, although its oil is not widely produced commercially.
Aroma and Composition
- Bornyl AcetateOften the key component, especially in Siberian fir oil (typically 25% to 40%), giving a soft, sweet, balsamic note.
- Alpha-Pinene, Camphene and Beta-PineneAdd a fresh, piney character.
- Limonene and Delta-3-CareneAdd a clean, bright freshness.
The overall scent is fresh, sweet, balsamic and green, strongly evoking a winter forest or a Christmas tree.
Applications
- Aromatherapy blends for fresh air and clear breathing
- Sauna, bath and spa products
- Massage oils and muscle-rub blends
- Soaps, shampoos and shower gels
- Room sprays, candles and seasonal home fragrance
- Household cleaners and air fresheners
- Men's fragrances and forest-type accords
Traditional Use
In Russia and Scandinavia, fir needle oil is a traditional addition to sauna water and to rubbing oils. It is widely used in aromatherapy for inhalation blends and to create a fresh, uplifting atmosphere. These are traditional uses and not medical claims.
Safety and Dilution
Fir Needle Oil should be diluted before skin contact. Like other conifer oils rich in monoterpenes, it oxidises over time, and oxidised oil is more likely to irritate or sensitise skin. It should be stored in full, tightly closed containers and used within its shelf life. Use within IFRA standards and local regulations. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children. Not for internal use.
Blending Tips
Fir needle blends well with pine, spruce, cedarwood, eucalyptus, lavender, rosemary, lemon, orange and frankincense.
Quality Parameters
- Botanical species (Abies sibirica, A. balsamea or A. alba)
- Bornyl acetate content by gas chromatography
- Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation
- Peroxide value
- Screening for turpentine adulteration
Packaging and Storage
Supplied in aluminium bottles, HDPE containers or drums. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
For sauna and bath products, dilute fir needle oil in an emulsifier or alcohol before adding it to water. Because it oxidises easily, keep drums full and closed, and consider nitrogen-flushed packs for long storage.
