Frankincense Oil is a fresh, resinous, woody and slightly citrusy essential oil steam distilled from the gum resin of Boswellia trees. It is one of the oldest and most treasured aromatic materials in the world and is widely used in aromatherapy, skin care, perfumery, incense and meditation products.
Arizone International supplies Frankincense Oil in several Boswellia species for aromatherapy brands, skin care companies, perfumers and private label businesses.
About Frankincense
Frankincense, also called olibanum, is the dried resin that seeps from cuts made in the bark of Boswellia trees. These hardy trees grow in dry, rocky regions of Oman, Yemen, Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan and India. For thousands of years, frankincense has been burned in temples, churches and homes, and it was one of the gifts of the Magi in the Christian nativity story. The ancient "Incense Route" carried it from Arabia to Egypt, Rome and India.
Main Types of Frankincense Oil
- Boswellia carterii / sacraFrom Somalia and Oman. Fresh, citrusy and pine-like, rich in alpha-pinene. The most popular type in aromatherapy.
- Boswellia serrata (Indian Frankincense)Known in India as salai guggul or shallaki. Grown in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat and other states. Its oil often contains alpha-thujene and has a fresh, spicy, lemony scent.
- Boswellia frereanaFrom Somalia. Softer, sweeter and lemony.
- Boswellia papyriferaFrom Ethiopia and Sudan. Rich in octyl acetate, with a fruity, soft scent.
Boswellic Acids: An Important Note
Boswellic acids, which are studied for joint and inflammation support, are heavy compounds that do not pass into the steam-distilled essential oil. They are found in Boswellia resin extracts, such as Boswellia serrata extract, not in frankincense essential oil. This distinction is often misunderstood.
Applications
- Aromatherapy and meditation blends
- Face serums, creams and anti-ageing skin care
- Perfumery, especially incense, woody and oriental accords
- Incense sticks, dhoop and resin burners
- Massage oils and body care
- Candles and home fragrance
Safety and Dilution
Frankincense Oil is generally regarded as mild, but it should always be diluted before skin use. Like other oils rich in monoterpenes, it oxidises over time and should be stored properly. A patch test is recommended. Not for internal use. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children.
Sustainability
Wild Boswellia populations are under pressure from overtapping and land use changes. We work with suppliers who follow responsible tapping and sourcing practices where possible.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Choose the Boswellia species to match your product: carterii or sacra for a fresh, citrusy aromatherapy oil, and serrata for an Indian-origin, spicier profile. Remember that boswellic acids come from resin extracts, not from the distilled oil.
