Cubeb Oil is a warm, spicy, woody and slightly camphoraceous essential oil steam distilled from the dried unripe berries of Piper cubeba, also called tailed pepper or Java pepper. It is related to black pepper but has a softer, more woody and more aromatic scent. Cubeb oil is used in perfumery, gin and spirit flavours, and aromatherapy.
Arizone International supplies Cubeb Oil for perfumers, flavour houses, spirit producers and speciality aromatherapy brands.
About Cubeb
Cubeb is a climbing vine native to Java and Sumatra in Indonesia, where most cubeb is still produced. The berries look like black peppercorns but have a small "tail" (the stalk) still attached, which gives them the name "tailed pepper". In India, cubeb is known as kabab chini or sheetal chini and has long been used in Ayurveda and Unani medicine and as a spice in some traditional dishes.
Cubeb was a highly valued spice in medieval Europe, where it was used in cooking and in traditional remedies. Its use in European cooking declined over time, but it remains popular in North African spice blends, such as some versions of ras el hanout, and in Indonesian cooking. It is also used as a botanical in several modern gins, including Bombay Sapphire.
