Cypress Oil is a fresh, clean, woody and slightly resinous essential oil steam distilled from the needles and twigs of Cupressus sempervirens, the Mediterranean or Italian cypress. It is used in aromatherapy, perfumery, men's grooming, deodorants and personal care products.
Arizone International supplies Cypress Oil for aromatherapy brands, fragrance houses, cosmetic manufacturers and private label companies.
About the Cypress Tree
The Mediterranean cypress is a tall, narrow evergreen tree that is a familiar sight across Italy, Greece, France, Spain and the Middle East. It can live for hundreds of years, and its species name "sempervirens" means "always green". In ancient times, the cypress was a symbol of eternity and was often planted in cemeteries. Its durable wood was used for doors, chests and statues. The oil is mainly produced in France, Spain, Morocco and Croatia.
Aroma and Composition
- Alpha-PineneUsually the main component, often 40% to 60%, giving a fresh, pine-like note.
- Delta-3-CareneAdds a sweet, resinous freshness.
- CedrolA woody sesquiterpene alcohol that gives depth and staying power.
- Limonene, Myrcene and TerpinoleneContribute a clean, fresh lift.
The overall scent is fresh, green, woody and slightly smoky, like a walk through an evergreen forest.
Applications
- Aromatherapy blends for freshness and grounding
- Men's fragrances, colognes, aftershaves and beard oils
- Deodorants and foot-care products
- Massage oils and leg-care products
- Soaps, shampoos and body washes
- Diffuser blends, room sprays and home fragrance
Traditional Use
In aromatherapy, cypress oil is traditionally used in blends for the legs, for oily skin and in fresh, clarifying blends. It is also used in inhalation blends for a clear, fresh feeling. These are traditional aromatherapy uses, not medical claims.
Safety and Dilution
Cypress Oil is generally regarded as mild, but it should always be diluted before skin contact. Like other oils rich in pinenes, it can oxidise over time, and oxidised oil is more likely to irritate skin, so store it properly and use within its shelf life. Use within IFRA standards and local regulations. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children. Not for internal use.
Blending Tips
Cypress blends well with juniper, pine, cedarwood, lavender, clary sage, bergamot, lemon, orange, frankincense and sandalwood.
Quality Parameters
- Botanical identity (Cupressus sempervirens)
- Gas chromatography profile, including alpha-pinene and delta-3-carene
- Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation
- Aroma and colour evaluation
- Screening for adulteration with turpentine or other conifer oils
Packaging and Storage
Supplied in aluminium bottles, HDPE containers or drums. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place, away from heat and air.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Cypress is popular in men's grooming, deodorants and foot care because of its clean, woody freshness. Like other conifer oils, it oxidises over time, so buy in pack sizes you can use within a few months of opening.
