Croton Oil is a thick, pale yellow to brownish oil pressed from the seeds of Croton tiglium, a small tree of the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae) native to India and Southeast Asia. Unlike most products in this category, croton oil is not an aromatic essential oil but a fixed oil. It is extremely powerful and toxic, and it is supplied only for controlled industrial, research and regulated pharmaceutical use.
Arizone International supplies Croton Oil only to qualified buyers, such as research laboratories and licensed manufacturers, with full safety documentation.
About Croton Tiglium
Croton tiglium is known in India as jamalgota. The tree grows in India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, southern China and Southeast Asia. Its seeds have been known in Ayurveda, Unani and traditional Chinese medicine for centuries, where they were used, after special purification (shodhana), as a very strong purgative. Traditional texts treat jamalgota as a highly toxic substance that must be processed carefully before any use.
Key Compounds
- Phorbol EstersSuch as 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA), which are extremely irritating and are used in laboratory research.
- Crotonic Acid and Related Fatty AcidsContributing to the oil's irritant action.
- CrotinA toxic protein found in the seeds.
Applications
- Biomedical research, where phorbol esters from croton oil are used as standard tools to study inflammation and cell signalling in laboratory models
- Historically, in dermatology, as an ingredient in chemical peel formulations (such as phenol-croton oil peels) used only by trained medical professionals
- Regulated traditional preparations, only after prescribed purification and under local regulations
- Industrial and research uses under controlled conditions
Croton oil is not suitable for cosmetics, aromatherapy, massage or any consumer product.
Important Safety Warning
Croton oil is one of the most powerful irritants and purgatives known. Even a few drops taken by mouth can cause severe vomiting, diarrhoea, collapse and death. On the skin, it causes blistering and severe inflammation. It must never be taken internally, used in consumer products, or handled without protective gloves, goggles and suitable ventilation. It must be stored securely, clearly labelled and kept away from children and untrained persons. Please read the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) before handling.
Regulatory Note
Croton oil and croton seeds are prohibited in cosmetic products in the EU and in many other markets. Transport may also be subject to regulations for toxic substances. Buyers are responsible for checking and complying with the rules in their country. We may request information about the intended use before supply.
