Clove Oil is a strong, warm and spicy essential oil obtained from the clove tree, Syzygium aromaticum. It is produced from the buds, leaves or stems of the tree, and each part gives a slightly different oil. Clove oil is one of the most widely used spice oils in the world, with applications in oral care, food flavours, perfumery, soaps, household products and aroma chemical production.
Arizone International supplies Clove Oil in bud, leaf and stem grades for oral-care brands, flavour houses, soap and fragrance manufacturers, and eugenol users.
Types of Clove Oil
- Clove Bud OilThe finest grade, from dried flower buds, with a sweet, rich aroma. Used in premium flavours, oral care and perfumery.
- Clove Leaf OilFrom leaves that fall or are pruned. It is the most economical grade and the main natural source of eugenol for industry.
- Clove Stem OilFrom the stems. It is high in eugenol with a fairly good aroma, and it is used in flavours and fragrances.
Please tell us your application so we can recommend the right grade.
Clove Oil and Indonesia's Kretek
Indonesia is the world's largest producer and consumer of cloves, much of which is used in kretek, clove-flavoured cigarettes. Madagascar and Tanzania (Zanzibar and Pemba) are the major exporters of clove oil, especially leaf oil. India, Sri Lanka and other countries also produce cloves and clove oil.
Aroma and Composition
- EugenolThe main component in all grades, usually 70% to 90%.
- Eugenyl AcetateHigher in bud oil, giving a sweeter note.
- Beta-CaryophylleneHigher in leaf oil, adding a woody, spicy note.
Applications
- Toothpaste, mouthwash and dental care products
- Food flavours, spice blends, bakery and meat products
- Perfumery, especially carnation, spicy and oriental accords
- Soaps, candles and household products
- Natural source of eugenol and for production of natural vanillin and isoeugenol
- Traditional balms and pain-relief rubs
Traditional and Research Interest
Clove oil has long been used as a traditional home remedy for toothache. Eugenol is used in dentistry in certain temporary dental materials. Laboratory studies have shown antimicrobial and antioxidant activity. These are traditional and research uses, not approved health claims.
Safety and Dilution
Clove oil is a strong irritant and can cause burning of skin and mucous membranes if used undiluted. It should always be well diluted and used within IFRA limits for eugenol. It should not be used on young children, as swallowing clove oil has caused serious poisoning. People taking blood thinners should avoid concentrated use. Keep out of reach of children.
Quality Parameters
- Grade and plant part (bud, leaf or stem)
- Eugenol content by gas chromatography
- Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation
- Colour and aroma evaluation
- Screening for synthetic eugenol adulteration
Packaging and Storage
Supplied in aluminium bottles, HDPE containers or drums. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place. Clove oil darkens slowly with exposure to air and iron, so avoid unlined metal containers.
