Copal Resin Oil
Part of our Oils range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Copal Resin Oil is an aromatic oil steam distilled from copal, a fragrant tree resin used for centuries as incense in Central and South America, Africa and Asia. It has a fresh, lemony, balsamic and slightly peppery scent, somewhat similar to frankincense, and it is used in perfumery, incense, aromatherapy and natural fragrance products.
Arizone International supplies Copal Resin Oil for perfumers, incense makers, aromatherapy brands and speciality fragrance companies.
What Is Copal?
"Copal" is a general term for aromatic resins from several different trees. The name comes from the Nahuatl (Aztec) word "copalli", meaning incense. The main sources include:
- Mexican and Central American CopalFrom Protium and Bursera trees, related to frankincense and myrrh. Used by the Maya and Aztecs in ceremonies, and still burned today, for example during Día de los Muertos.
- South American Copal (Breu)From Protium species in the Amazon.
- African and Asian CopalsFrom trees such as Hymenaea and Agathis, some of which are also used in varnishes.
In India, a related resin from Canarium strictum, called black dammar or kala dhoop, and white dammar from Vateria indica are burned in homes and temples in a similar way.
Aroma and Composition
The composition depends on the tree source. Copal oils from Protium and Bursera species are typically rich in monoterpenes such as limonene, alpha-pinene and alpha-phellandrene, which give a fresh, citrusy and resinous scent. Some copal oils also contain elemol and other sesquiterpenes that add a balsamic depth.
Applications
- Perfumery, as a fresh, resinous and incense-like note
- Incense, dhoop and smudging products
- Aromatherapy and meditation blends
- Natural perfumes and attars
- Candles, room sprays and home fragrance
- Speciality soaps and cosmetics
Blending Tips
Copal blends well with frankincense, myrrh, palo santo, sandalwood, cedarwood, lemon, orange and lavender. It can be used as a fresher, lighter alternative to frankincense in some blends.
Safety and Dilution
Copal Resin Oil should be diluted before skin contact. Like other terpene-rich oils, it can oxidise over time and become more likely to irritate skin, so it should be stored properly. A patch test is recommended. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children. Not for internal use. Use within IFRA standards and local regulations.
Sustainability
Copal is traditionally harvested by making careful cuts in the tree bark, much like frankincense. Responsible tapping allows the tree to keep producing resin. We work with suppliers who follow sustainable harvesting practices where possible.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Copal oil is a useful fresher, lighter partner for frankincense in incense-style perfumes and meditation blends. Because copal comes from several tree species, ask for a GC report to confirm that each lot matches your approved sample.
