Coriander Oil is a sweet, spicy, woody and slightly floral essential oil steam distilled from the crushed ripe seeds of Coriandrum sativum. It is rich in linalool and is used in food and beverage flavours, gin, perfumery, soaps, cosmetics and aromatherapy.
Arizone International supplies Coriander Seed Oil for flavour houses, spirit and beverage producers, fragrance companies and aroma chemical users.
India and Coriander
India is the world's largest producer and consumer of coriander seed (dhania). The crop is grown mainly in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, with Rajasthan's Kota and Ramganj Mandi areas being the main trading hub. Coriander is essential in Indian cooking, used both as fresh leaves and as dried seed in almost every masala. Russia, Ukraine, Morocco, Bulgaria and Egypt are other important producers of coriander seed for oil.
Seed Oil vs Leaf Oil
Coriander seed oil and coriander leaf (cilantro) oil smell completely different. Seed oil is sweet, floral and woody, while leaf oil has the sharp, green, "soapy" aroma of fresh coriander leaves, which comes from aldehydes such as decenal. This page covers the seed oil.
Aroma and Composition
- LinaloolUsually 60% to 80%, giving a sweet, floral, woody note. Coriander is one of the best natural sources of linalool.
- Alpha-Pinene and Gamma-TerpineneAdd a fresh, spicy lift.
- Camphor and Geranyl AcetatePresent in smaller amounts, adding depth.
Applications
- Gin, liqueurs and spirit flavours, where coriander is a classic botanical
- Food flavours for sausages, meat products, sauces, curries and bakery
- Chocolate, confectionery and beverages
- Perfumery, especially fresh, spicy and floral accords
- Soaps, detergents and personal care products
- Aromatherapy blends
- Natural linalool source for aroma chemicals
Traditional Use
In Ayurveda and many traditional systems, coriander seed is used to support digestion, and coriander water is a common home remedy in India. Coriander oil is approved as a food flavour in many countries. Traditional uses are not medical claims.
Safety and Dilution
Coriander Seed Oil is relatively mild but should be diluted before skin contact. Like other linalool-rich oils, it can oxidise over time, and oxidised linalool can sensitise skin, so store it properly. Use within IFRA standards and food flavour regulations. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children.
Blending Tips
Coriander blends well with bergamot, orange, lemon, ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, clary sage, jasmine and neroli.
