Clove Bud Oil is a warm, rich, sweet and spicy essential oil steam distilled from the dried flower buds of Syzygium aromaticum, the clove tree. It is the finest grade of clove oil and is used in dental and oral care, food flavours, perfumery, soaps and traditional preparations.

Arizone International supplies Clove Bud Oil for oral-care and dental product manufacturers, flavour houses, fragrance companies and aroma chemical users.

About Cloves

The clove tree is native to the Maluku Islands (the famous Spice Islands) of Indonesia. The unopened flower buds are picked by hand when they turn pink and then dried in the sun until they become dark brown. Cloves were one of the most valuable spices in history, and control of the clove trade led to wars between European powers. Today, Indonesia, Madagascar, Tanzania (Zanzibar), Sri Lanka and India are major producers. In India, cloves (laung) are grown in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and are essential in Indian cooking.

Bud, Leaf and Stem Oil

  • Clove Bud OilFrom the dried buds. The finest, sweetest and most rounded aroma, with a good balance of eugenol and eugenyl acetate. Preferred for flavours and perfumery.
  • Clove Leaf OilFrom the leaves. Harsher, higher in eugenol and much cheaper. Often used for eugenol extraction and in household products.
  • Clove Stem OilFrom the stems. Between bud and leaf in quality.

Aroma and Composition

  • EugenolUsually 70% to 85%, giving the warm, spicy clove character.
  • Eugenyl AcetateUsually higher in bud oil, often 8% to 15%, adding a sweeter, fruitier note.
  • Beta-CaryophylleneAdds a woody, spicy depth.

Applications

  • Toothpaste, mouthwash and dental care products
  • Food flavours for bakery, meat, sauces and spice blends
  • Beverages and confectionery
  • Perfumery, especially oriental, spicy and carnation accords
  • Soaps and personal care products
  • Traditional and Ayurvedic preparations

Traditional Use in Dental Care

Clove oil has been used for generations as a home remedy for toothache, and eugenol is still used in dentistry as part of certain temporary fillings and dressings (zinc oxide eugenol). These are traditional and professional dental uses, not claims for this product as a medicine.

Safety and Dilution

Clove oil is strong and can irritate or burn skin and mucous membranes. It should always be well diluted. IFRA sets limits for eugenol in cosmetics. It should not be used on children under two, and it may interact with blood-thinning medicines. Not for internal use except as a food flavour within regulations. Keep out of reach of children.

Quality Parameters

  • Botanical identity and plant part (bud)
  • Eugenol and eugenyl acetate content by gas chromatography
  • Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation
  • Aroma and colour evaluation
  • Screening for leaf oil or synthetic eugenol adulteration

Packaging and Storage

Supplied in aluminium bottles, HDPE containers or drums. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place. Clove oil is heavier than water and may darken with age.
