Clary Sage Oil is a sweet, herbaceous, slightly nutty and amber-like essential oil steam distilled from the flowering tops and leaves of Salvia sclarea. It is one of the most important oils in perfumery and aromatherapy, and it is also the main natural source of sclareol, a key raw material for making ambroxide, a valuable ambergris-like aroma chemical.

Arizone International supplies Clary Sage Oil for fragrance houses, aromatherapy brands, cosmetic manufacturers and private label companies.

About Clary Sage

Clary sage is a biennial herb of the mint family, native to the Mediterranean and Central Asia. It has large, wrinkled leaves and tall spikes of pale lilac, pink and white flowers. The name "clary" is said to come from the Latin "clarus", meaning clear, because the seeds were once used in folk remedies for the eyes. Today it is grown mainly in Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, France, Moldova and the United States. India has also trialled clary sage cultivation in cooler regions.

Clary Sage vs Common Sage

Clary sage is quite different from common sage (Salvia officinalis). Common sage oil is high in thujone and must be used with caution, while clary sage oil contains little or no thujone and is much gentler. Clary sage has a softer, sweeter, more floral scent.

Aroma and Composition

  • Linalyl AcetateOften 55% to 75%, giving a sweet, fruity-floral note similar to bergamot and lavender.
  • LinaloolAdds a soft floral freshness.
  • SclareolA diterpene alcohol present in small amounts in the oil and in larger amounts in clary sage concrete. It is used to produce ambroxide.
  • Germacrene D and Alpha-TerpineolContribute depth.

Applications

  • Fine perfumery, especially amber, chypre, fougère and lavender accords
  • Aromatherapy blends for relaxation
  • Massage oils and bath products
  • Skin and hair care products
  • Flavouring in some wines, liqueurs and tobacco, where permitted
  • Source of sclareol for ambroxide production

Traditional Use

In aromatherapy, clary sage is popular in blends for women, especially during the menstrual cycle, and in relaxation blends. These are traditional aromatherapy uses and not medical claims.

Safety and Dilution

Clary sage oil should be diluted before skin contact. It is traditionally advised to avoid it during pregnancy and not to combine it with alcohol, as it may increase drowsiness. People with hormone-sensitive conditions should seek advice. Like other linalool-rich oils, it can oxidise, so store it properly. Not for internal use. Keep out of reach of children.

Quality Parameters

  • Botanical identity (Salvia sclarea)
  • Linalyl acetate and linalool content by gas chromatography
  • Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation
  • Ester value
  • Screening for synthetic linalyl acetate adulteration

Packaging and Storage

Supplied in aluminium bottles, HDPE containers or drums. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators

Clary sage adds a soft, amber-like warmth to lavender and citrus blends, and small amounts help fix lighter notes. Store it in full, closed containers, as its linalyl acetate and linalool can oxidise over time.
