Citrus Oil
Part of our Oils range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Citrus Oil is a general name for the essential oils obtained from the peels and other parts of citrus fruits, such as orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit, mandarin, tangerine and bergamot. These oils are fresh, bright and uplifting, and together they form one of the largest groups of essential oils used in food, beverages, perfumery, cosmetics and cleaning products.
Arizone International supplies a full range of Citrus Oils, as well as citrus blends and terpenes, for flavour houses, beverage companies, fragrance and cosmetic manufacturers, and household product brands.
How Citrus Oils Are Made
Most citrus oils come from the peel, where tiny oil glands hold the aromatic oil. There are three main methods:
- Cold Pressing (Expression)The peel is mechanically pressed or scraped to release the oil, usually as a by-product of juice production. This gives the most natural, fresh aroma.
- Steam DistillationUsed for some oils, such as distilled lime, and produces a different, often less phototoxic oil.
- Folding (Concentration)Citrus oils can be "folded" by removing part of the limonene, making them stronger, more stable and more soluble in drinks.
Other citrus oils come from different parts of the tree, such as petitgrain from leaves and neroli from flowers.
Main Citrus Oils
- Sweet orange, bitter orange and blood orange
- Lemon and lime (pressed and distilled)
- Grapefruit (pink and white)
- Mandarin (green, yellow and red) and tangerine
- Bergamot and bergamot FCF (furocoumarin-free)
- Citrus terpenes and custom citrus blends
Key Compounds
- LimoneneThe main component in most citrus oils, often 65% to 95%.
- CitralImportant in lemon and lime.
- NootkatoneA key flavour compound in grapefruit.
- Linalyl AcetateImportant in bergamot.
Applications
- Soft drinks, juices, beverages and confectionery
- Perfumes, colognes and body sprays

Safety Notes
Many cold-pressed citrus oils, especially bergamot, lime, bitter orange, lemon and grapefruit, contain furocoumarins that can cause phototoxic skin reactions when skin is exposed to sunlight. IFRA sets limits for these in leave-on products. Citrus oils also oxidise quickly, and oxidised limonene can cause skin sensitisation, so they should be stored properly and used within their shelf life. Always dilute before skin contact. Keep out of reach of children.
Quality Parameters
- Botanical source and origin
- Gas chromatography profile
- Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation
- Aldehyde content and evaporation residue
- Peroxide value
- Screening for synthetic limonene adulteration
Packaging and Storage
Supplied in aluminium bottles, HDPE containers or drums, with nitrogen flushing on request. Store in a cool, dark place, ideally refrigerated, and keep containers full and tightly closed.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
For clear drinks, ask for folded or terpeneless citrus oils, which dissolve better and are more stable. For leave-on skin products, choose distilled or furocoumarin-free (FCF) grades to avoid phototoxicity.
