Chypre Oil is a classic perfume compound rather than a single-plant essential oil. It recreates the famous chypre accord, a rich, mossy, woody and citrus fragrance structure built around bergamot, labdanum, oakmoss and patchouli. It is used in attars, perfumes, cosmetics, soaps, incense and home fragrance.

Arizone International supplies Chypre Oil compounds for attar makers, perfumers, cosmetic brands, incense and agarbatti manufacturers, and private label companies.

The Story of Chypre

"Chypre" is the French word for Cyprus. Perfumes made from Cyprus ingredients such as labdanum and oakmoss were known in Europe for centuries, but the modern chypre style was defined in 1917, when François Coty launched his perfume "Chypre". It combined a fresh bergamot top note with a deep, mossy base of oakmoss and labdanum. It became one of the great fragrance families, and many famous perfumes since then have been chypres.

In India, chypre is also a popular attar and fragrance oil style, with a warm, mossy and slightly powdery character that is used in attars and incense.

The Chypre Structure

  • Top NotesBergamot and other citrus oils give a fresh opening.
  • Heart NotesFloral notes such as rose, jasmine and sometimes fruity notes.
  • Base NotesOakmoss, labdanum, patchouli, vetiver and musks create the deep, mossy, woody base.

Modern Chypre Compounds

Oakmoss contains the natural allergens atranol and chloroatranol, and IFRA and EU rules now strictly limit them. Modern chypre compounds therefore use low-atranol oakmoss, other mosses or safe aroma chemicals to give the same mossy effect while meeting current regulations. Our chypre compounds are formulated with this in mind.

Applications

  • Attars and concentrated perfume oils
  • Alcohol-based perfumes and body sprays
  • Incense sticks, agarbatti and dhoop
  • Soaps, detergents and personal care products
  • Candles, reed diffusers and home fragrance
  • Hair oils and cosmetics

Customisation

We can adjust chypre compounds to suit your product, for example a fresher citrus chypre, a floral chypre, a leathery chypre or a woody attar-style version. We also offer variants suitable for different product bases, such as alcohol, oil, soap and incense.

Safety and Dilution

Chypre Oil is a concentrated fragrance compound and must be used at the correct dilution in finished products. It may contain known allergens such as citral, limonene, linalool and others, which must be declared on labels in some markets. IFRA certificates and allergen declarations are available. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children. Not for internal use.

Quality Parameters

  • Odour match against approved standard
  • Specific gravity and refractive index
  • Flash point
  • IFRA compliance and allergen declaration
  • Colour and clarity

Packaging and Storage

Supplied in aluminium bottles, HDPE containers or drums. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators

Ask for the IFRA certificate and allergen list for your chosen chypre compound before finalising a formula, so labels are correct for each market. Different product bases, such as alcohol, soap and incense, may need slightly different versions of the same chypre accord.
