Cinnamon Leaf Oil is a warm, spicy and clove-like essential oil steam distilled from the leaves and twigs of Cinnamomum verum, the true cinnamon tree. It is much more affordable than cinnamon bark oil and is widely used in soaps, household products, candles, oral care, flavours and as a natural source of eugenol.

Arizone International supplies Cinnamon Leaf Oil for soap and candle makers, household product manufacturers, flavour and fragrance companies, and aroma chemical users.

About the Oil

Cinnamon trees in Sri Lanka, southern India, Madagascar and the Seychelles are regularly cut back to produce young shoots for cinnamon bark. The leaves and twigs from this pruning are collected and steam distilled, which makes cinnamon leaf oil a useful by-product of the cinnamon industry. The oil is yellow to brownish and has a scent closer to clove than to the sweet cinnamon of the bark.

Leaf Oil vs Bark Oil

  • Cinnamon Leaf OilRich in eugenol, with a spicy, clove-like aroma. More affordable and somewhat gentler on skin than bark oil, although still a potential irritant.
  • Cinnamon Bark OilRich in cinnamaldehyde, with a sweet, true cinnamon flavour. Much more expensive and a stronger skin sensitiser.

Buyers should be careful to specify which oil they need, as the two are sometimes confused.

Aroma and Composition

  • EugenolUsually 70% to 85%, giving the warm, clove-like character.
  • Eugenyl AcetateAdds a softer, sweeter note.
  • CinnamaldehydePresent in small amounts, usually under 5%.
  • Beta-Caryophyllene and LinaloolContribute warmth and freshness.

Applications

  • Soaps, detergents and household cleaners
  • Candles, potpourri and home fragrance
  • Spicy and festive fragrance accords
  • Toothpaste and oral-care flavours
  • Food flavours, where permitted
  • A natural source of eugenol for aroma chemical production, such as natural vanillin
  • Natural insect-repellent products

Safety and Dilution

Cinnamon leaf oil can irritate skin and mucous membranes because of its high eugenol content and should always be well diluted before skin contact. IFRA standards set use limits for eugenol. The oil may interact with blood-thinning medicines and should be avoided in concentrated form during pregnancy. It is not suitable for young children. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children. Only food-grade oil should be used for flavour, within local regulations.

Blending Tips

Cinnamon leaf blends well with orange, clove, ginger, nutmeg, vanilla, frankincense, cedarwood and rosemary, and is a key note in festive blends.

Quality Parameters

  • Botanical identity (Cinnamomum verum leaf)
  • Eugenol content by gas chromatography
  • Specific gravity and refractive index
  • Colour and aroma evaluation
  • Screening for synthetic eugenol or clove oil adulteration

Packaging and Storage

Supplied in aluminium bottles, HDPE containers or drums. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place. The oil may darken over time, which does not affect quality significantly.
