Chilli Seed Oil is a warm, spicy aromatic oil obtained from the seeds of Capsicum annuum and related chilli peppers. Depending on the method used, it may be a steam-distilled oil, a CO2 extract or a carrier oil infused with chilli. It is used in food flavours, warming balms, massage oils, hair oils and speciality cosmetic products.

Arizone International supplies Chilli Seed Oil and related chilli extracts for food processors, flavour houses, balm and cosmetic manufacturers, and exporters.

India, the Chilli Capital

India is the world's largest producer, consumer and exporter of dried chillies. Andhra Pradesh, especially the Guntur region, is the biggest producing area, followed by Telangana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Famous Indian varieties include Guntur Sannam, Byadgi, Kashmiri and Bhut Jolokia from the north-east, once rated the hottest chilli in the world. Chilli seeds are a by-product of the chilli processing industry, which makes them a useful source for oil.

Types of Chilli Oil

  • Chilli Seed Oil (Pressed or Extracted)A fixed oil from the seeds, mild in heat, rich in linoleic acid and used in food and cosmetics.
  • Capsicum OleoresinA solvent extract of the whole chilli containing capsaicin, the compound that makes chilli hot, and red colour pigments. Used for heat and colour in foods and in warming balms.
  • CO2 ExtractA clean extract with capsaicin and aroma compounds.

Please specify the type, heat level (in Scoville units or capsaicin content) and intended use when you enquire.

Key Compounds

  • Capsaicin and DihydrocapsaicinResponsible for the heat. Topical capsaicin is studied for its warming effect on the skin.
  • Linoleic and Oleic AcidsThe main fatty acids in seed oil.
  • CarotenoidsSuch as capsanthin, which give red colour.
  • TocopherolsNatural vitamin E antioxidants.

Applications

Safety

Chilli oils containing capsaicin can cause strong burning and irritation, especially on broken skin, eyes and mucous membranes. Wash hands after handling and keep away from eyes. Hot grades should only be used at low, controlled levels in formulations. Food use must follow local food regulations, including limits on contaminants such as aflatoxins and pesticide residues. Keep out of reach of children.
