White Camphor Oil is a fresh, clean and penetrating essential oil obtained from the wood of the camphor tree, Cinnamomum camphora. It is the lightest fraction produced when crude camphor oil is refined, and most of the solid camphor is removed during the process. It is used in balms, rubs, household products, soaps and industrial fragrances.
Arizone International supplies White Camphor Oil for balm and ointment makers, household product manufacturers, soap companies and fragrance users.
How White Camphor Oil Is Made
The camphor tree is a large evergreen native to China, Japan and Taiwan and is now grown in many warm countries. Its wood, roots and branches are steam distilled to produce crude camphor oil, from which solid camphor crystals separate. The remaining oil is then fractionally distilled into different grades:
- White Camphor OilThe first, lightest fraction. It is clear, fresh and rich in cineole and monoterpenes, with little safrole. This is the only grade suitable for general use.
- Brown Camphor OilA heavier fraction that is high in safrole and is not used in cosmetics.
- Yellow Camphor OilAlso high in safrole and restricted.
- Blue Camphor OilThe heaviest fraction.
The camphor tree also has several chemotypes. Ho wood oil, for example, comes from the linalool chemotype and has a completely different, soft floral scent.
Aroma and Composition
- 1,8-CineoleA major component, giving a fresh, eucalyptus-like note.

Applications
- Balms, rubs and liniments for a cooling feel
- Household cleaners, disinfectant fragrances and floor cleaners

Camphor in India
Camphor (kapur) has an important place in Indian homes and temples, where camphor tablets are burned during aarti. Much of the camphor used in India today is synthetic, made from turpentine, while natural camphor oil comes from the tree. Camphor is also a traditional ingredient in Ayurvedic balms.
Important Safety Note
Camphor is toxic if swallowed, and even small amounts can cause seizures in children. White camphor oil must never be taken internally, must be kept well out of reach of children and should not be used on or near the face of infants and young children. It should not be used during pregnancy or by people with epilepsy. On skin, it must be diluted. Only the white grade should be used, because brown and yellow grades contain safrole, which is restricted. Use within IFRA standards and local regulations.
