Carrot Seed Oil is an earthy, woody and slightly sweet essential oil steam distilled from the dried seeds of Daucus carota, the wild carrot, also known as Queen Anne's lace. It is a popular ingredient in natural skin care, anti-ageing cosmetics and perfumery.
Arizone International supplies Carrot Seed Essential Oil for cosmetic manufacturers, skin care brands, aromatherapy businesses and private label companies.
Essential Oil vs Carrot Oil
Carrot seed essential oil is often confused with other carrot oils. It is important to know the difference:
- Carrot Seed Essential OilSteam distilled from the seeds. It is a volatile, aromatic oil with a woody, earthy scent and must be diluted. It contains little or no beta-carotene.
- Carrot Seed Carrier OilCold pressed from the seeds. A fixed oil used as a base.
- Carrot Root Oil (Infused)Made by infusing carrot roots in a carrier oil. It is orange because of its beta-carotene content.
This page covers the steam-distilled essential oil.
About the Plant
Wild carrot is a biennial herb of the Apiaceae family that grows across Europe, Asia and North Africa, and it is the ancestor of the cultivated carrot. Its umbrella-shaped clusters of white flowers produce small, spiny seeds. The oil is produced in France, Hungary, Egypt and India, among other countries.
Aroma and Composition
- CarotolA sesquiterpene alcohol, often the main component, giving the earthy, woody character.
- Alpha-Pinene and SabineneAdd a fresh top note.
- Daucol and Beta-CaryophylleneContribute depth.
The aroma is earthy, dry, woody and slightly sweet, reminding some people of orris root. It is not like the smell of fresh carrots.
Applications
- Anti-ageing serums, face oils and creams
- Products for mature or dry skin
- Natural and organic skin care
- Perfumery, especially earthy, iris and woody accords
- Hair and scalp-care products
- Aromatherapy blends

Carrot seed oil should be diluted before skin contact. A patch test is recommended. It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding without professional advice. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children. Not for internal use. Use within IFRA standards and local regulations.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Carrot seed oil has a strong earthy smell, so use it at low levels in face oils and serums and balance it with softer oils such as lavender or geranium. It should not be confused with orange carrot root oil, which is an infused oil.
