Cananga Oil is a sweet, floral and slightly woody essential oil steam distilled from the flowers of Cananga odorata var. macrophylla. It is a close relative of ylang-ylang oil but has a heavier, more woody and leathery character, and it is widely used in perfumery, soaps, cosmetics and hair care as a more affordable floral note.
Arizone International supplies Cananga Oil for fragrance houses, soap and cosmetic manufacturers, hair oil brands and aromatherapy businesses.
Cananga vs Ylang-Ylang
Cananga and ylang-ylang come from closely related forms of the same tropical tree. Ylang-ylang oil is produced mainly in the Comoros, Madagascar and Mayotte from Cananga odorata var. genuina (forma genuina) and is distilled in fractions (Extra, I, II, III). Cananga oil comes from the macrophylla form and is produced mainly in Java, Indonesia, in a single, complete distillation.
The result is an oil with the same sweet, exotic floral heart as ylang-ylang, but with a stronger woody, leathery and slightly balsamic undertone. It is also more stable in soaps and more economical, which makes it popular in toiletries.

A Note on Hair Care
Cananga and ylang-ylang were key ingredients in "Macassar oil", a famous 19th-century hair oil. The oil was so common that people put cloths called antimacassars on chair backs to protect them from greasy hair. Cananga remains a popular fragrance in hair oils today.
Safety and Dilution
Cananga oil can cause skin sensitisation in some people and should always be diluted before use. IFRA standards restrict its use levels in cosmetics. A patch test is recommended. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children. Not for internal use. Strong floral oils can cause headaches in some people when used at high concentration.
Blending Tips
Cananga blends well with jasmine, rose, sandalwood, vetiver, patchouli, bergamot, orange and vanilla notes.
Quality Parameters

Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Choose cananga over ylang-ylang when a floral note must hold up in soap, as cananga is more stable in alkaline bases. It also blends well with patchouli and vetiver in hair oils and attars, giving a rich floral-woody character at a lower cost.
