Atlas Cedar Oil is a warm, woody and slightly sweet essential oil steam distilled from the wood of Cedrus atlantica, the true cedar tree of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco and Algeria. It is one of the classic woody base notes in perfumery and is also popular in aromatherapy, men's grooming, hair care and soap making.

Arizone International supplies Atlas Cedar Oil in bulk and small quantities for fragrance houses, cosmetic brands, soap and candle makers, aromatherapy companies and private label businesses.

A True Cedar

Many oils sold as "cedarwood" do not come from true cedars at all. Virginian and Texas cedarwood oils, for example, are distilled from juniper species. Atlas cedar, by contrast, belongs to the genus Cedrus, the same group as the Himalayan cedar (Cedrus deodara, known in India as deodar) and the cedar of Lebanon. The Atlas cedar grows at high altitudes in the Middle and High Atlas mountains of Morocco, where it forms large, protected forests.

The oil is mostly distilled from sawdust, wood shavings and waste from the timber industry, rather than from freshly cut trees. Morocco is the main producer. The oil is yellow to amber, fairly viscous, and has a long-lasting scent.

Aroma and Composition

  • HimachalenesAlpha-, beta- and gamma-himachalene are the main sesquiterpenes and give the dry, woody character.
  • AtlantonesKetones that add a sweet, slightly fruity and balsamic tone.
  • Low VolatilityThe oil evaporates slowly, making it an excellent fixative for lighter notes.

The scent is often described as woody, warm, balsamic and faintly camphoraceous, with a sweeter, softer profile than Virginian cedarwood.

Applications

  • Perfumery, as a woody base note and fixative in masculine, oriental and chypre fragrances
  • Men's grooming products, beard oils and aftershaves
  • Shampoos, hair oils and scalp-care formulations
  • Soaps, candles and incense
  • Aromatherapy blends for calm and grounding
  • Natural moth and insect-repellent sachets and products

Blending Tips

Atlas cedar blends well with bergamot, lemon, lavender, rosemary, cypress, frankincense, vetiver, patchouli, jasmine and rose. A small amount adds depth and staying power to citrus and herbal blends.

Safety and Dilution

Atlas Cedar Oil is usually considered mild, but it should always be diluted in a carrier oil before skin contact. A patch test is recommended for sensitive skin. Use in line with IFRA standards and local cosmetic regulations. Avoid use during pregnancy unless advised by a professional, keep away from eyes and keep out of reach of children. Not for internal use.

Quality Parameters

  • Botanical identity (Cedrus atlantica, not juniper-based cedarwood)
  • Gas chromatography profile, including himachalenes
  • Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation
  • Colour, clarity and aroma evaluation
  • Screening for adulteration with cheaper cedarwood oils

Packaging and Storage

Supplied in aluminium bottles, HDPE containers or lacquered steel drums. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place. Atlas cedar oil keeps well and may deepen slightly in colour with age.
