Benzoin Oil is a sweet, warm, vanilla-like aromatic material obtained from the resin of Styrax trees. Strictly speaking, benzoin is not a steam-distilled essential oil but a resinoid, prepared by dissolving the solid resin in a solvent. It is thick, rich and long-lasting and is one of the most loved base notes in perfumery, incense and soap making.
Arizone International supplies Benzoin resinoid in solvent-diluted, easy-to-pour forms for fragrance houses, attar makers, soap and candle manufacturers and cosmetic brands.
Where Benzoin Comes From
Benzoin is a gum resin that the tree produces when its bark is cut. Workers make small incisions in the trunk, and the resin slowly oozes out and hardens into tears or lumps, which are collected by hand. Two main types are traded:
- Siam BenzoinFrom Styrax tonkinensis, grown in Laos, Vietnam and Thailand. It has a very sweet, vanilla-like and chocolate-like scent and is preferred in fine perfumery.
- Sumatra BenzoinFrom Styrax benzoin, grown in Indonesia. It has a warmer, more balsamic and slightly spicy scent with a cinnamon-like note.
In India, benzoin is known as loban or sambrani and has long been burned as incense in homes, temples and mosques.
Aroma and Composition
- VanillinGives the characteristic sweet, vanilla-like note, especially in Siam benzoin.
- Benzoic Acid and Benzyl BenzoateContribute balsamic warmth.
- Cinnamic Acid EstersMore prominent in Sumatra benzoin.
Applications
- Perfumery, as a sweet, balsamic base note and fixative in oriental and gourmand fragrances
- Attars, incense sticks, dhoop and sambrani products
- Soaps and candles
- Lip balms, body butters and cosmetics
- Aromatherapy blends for warmth and comfort
- Traditional compound benzoin tincture (friar's balsam)
Forms Available
Pure benzoin resin is solid, so the resinoid is usually supplied diluted in a solvent such as dipropylene glycol (DPG), benzyl benzoate or ethanol to make it easy to handle. The dilution level should be confirmed at the time of order. A resinoid without solvent is thick and must be warmed before use.
Safety and Dilution
Benzoin can cause skin sensitisation in some people, and IFRA standards restrict its use in fragrances. It should be diluted before skin contact and tested on a small area first. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children. Not for internal use.
Quality Parameters
- Type of benzoin (Siam or Sumatra)
- Solvent type and resin percentage
- Aroma evaluation against reference samples
- Colour, viscosity and clarity
- Benzoic acid and vanillin content where required
Packaging and Storage
Supplied in aluminium bottles, HDPE containers or drums. Store tightly closed in a cool place. The material may thicken over time, which is normal.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Benzoin resinoid is usually supplied diluted, so always check the solvent and resin percentage on the specification before comparing prices. In soaps and candles, benzoin also works as a natural fixative, helping lighter notes last longer.
