Basil Oil is an aromatic essential oil steam distilled from the leaves and flowering tops of sweet basil, Ocimum basilicum. It has a fresh, green, spicy and slightly anise-like aroma and is used in perfumery, flavours, aromatherapy, cosmetics and oral care. Several types of basil oil are traded, and each has a different character.
Arizone International supplies Basil Oil for flavour houses, fragrance companies, cosmetic manufacturers, aromatherapy brands and exporters.
About Basil
Sweet basil probably originated in India and tropical Asia and spread to the Mediterranean thousands of years ago. It is now grown in India, Egypt, Vietnam, France, Italy and many other countries. India is a major producer, with commercial cultivation in states such as Uttar Pradesh, where basil is grown on a large scale for distillation. Sweet basil should not be confused with holy basil or tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum), which is a different species with its own oil and a special place in Indian tradition.
Types of Basil Oil (Chemotypes)
- Methyl Chavicol Type (Exotic or Comoros Basil)Rich in methyl chavicol (estragole), with a strong, sweet, anise-like scent. Commonly produced in India, Egypt and Vietnam.
- Linalool Type (European or French Basil)Rich in linalool, softer, sweeter and more floral. Highly valued in fine perfumery.
- Methyl Cinnamate TypeProduced in some regions, with a fruity, balsamic note.
Buyers should confirm the chemotype they need, as the aroma and regulatory profile differ.
Applications
- Food and beverage flavours, sauces and seasonings
- Perfumery, especially fresh, green and herbal accords
- Soaps, shampoos and personal care products
- Toothpaste and oral-care flavours
- Aromatherapy blends for focus and freshness
- Room sprays and home fragrance
Safety and Dilution
Basil oil should always be diluted before skin contact. Methyl chavicol (estragole) is restricted in some markets because high doses of estragole caused concerns in animal studies, so the methyl chavicol type should be used within the limits set by IFRA, the EU and food flavour regulations. Linalool-type basil oil can oxidise over time and become more likely to irritate skin, so it should be stored properly. Basil oil is not recommended during pregnancy, while breastfeeding or on young children. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children.
Blending Tips
Basil blends well with bergamot, lime, lemon, lavender, rosemary, geranium, clary sage, black pepper and citrus oils, adding a lively green freshness.
