Bergamot Mint Oil
Part of our Oils range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Bergamot Mint Oil is a fresh, floral and slightly citrusy essential oil steam distilled from the leaves and flowering tops of Mentha citrata, also known as Mentha aquatica var. citrata. Unlike peppermint and spearmint, it contains very little menthol or carvone. Instead, it is rich in linalool and linalyl acetate, which give it a scent closer to lavender and bergamot than to a typical mint.
Arizone International supplies Bergamot Mint Oil for fragrance houses, soap and cosmetic manufacturers, aromatherapy brands and aroma chemical users.
About Bergamot Mint
Bergamot mint, sometimes called orange mint or eau de cologne mint, is a creeping perennial herb with smooth, rounded leaves and a soft, fruity smell. It has no relation to the bergamot orange, but its scent reminds people of bergamot because both share linalyl acetate and linalool.
India is an important producer of bergamot mint oil. The crop is grown in the mint belt of Uttar Pradesh along with Mentha arvensis, and Indian research institutes have developed improved bergamot mint varieties for higher oil yield. The herb is harvested before or during flowering and distilled fresh or partly dried.
Aroma and Composition
- Linalyl AcetateOften the main component, giving a soft, fresh, fruity-floral note similar to bergamot and lavender.
- LinaloolAdds a sweet, floral freshness.
- Minor ComponentsIncluding small amounts of other terpenes; menthol is very low.
The overall aroma is fresh, sweet, lightly minty and floral, making it a useful and economical material in cologne-type fragrances.
Applications
- Colognes, fresh fragrances and lavender-type accords
- Soaps, detergents and personal care products
- Room fresheners and home fragrance
- Aromatherapy blends for relaxation
- A natural source of linalool and linalyl acetate for the aroma industry
Blending Tips
Bergamot mint blends well with lavender, bergamot, lemon, orange, petitgrain, geranium, rosemary and clary sage. It can add freshness and volume to floral and citrus blends at a lower cost than some traditional oils.
Safety and Dilution
Bergamot mint oil should be diluted before skin contact. Linalool and linalyl acetate can oxidise when exposed to air, and oxidised oil is more likely to irritate or sensitise skin, so the oil should be stored in full, tightly closed containers. Use within IFRA standards and local regulations. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children. Not for internal use.
Quality Parameters
- Botanical identity (Mentha citrata)
- Linalool and linalyl acetate content by gas chromatography
- Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation
- Ester value
- Aroma and colour evaluation
Packaging and Storage
Supplied in aluminium bottles, HDPE containers or drums. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place, away from heat and air.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Bergamot mint oil can be a cost-effective way to add a lavender-bergamot freshness to soaps, detergents and colognes. Because it is rich in linalool and linalyl acetate, store it away from air and use opened stock quickly to prevent oxidation.
