Armoise Oil, also called Moroccan armoise or white wormwood oil, is an essential oil steam distilled from the flowering tops of Artemisia herba-alba, a silvery, aromatic shrub of the dry steppes of North Africa and the Middle East. It has a strong, fresh, herbaceous and camphoraceous scent and is used mainly in perfumery, especially in fougère, chypre and masculine fragrances.
Arizone International supplies Armoise Oil for perfumers, fragrance houses, soap and cosmetic manufacturers.
About Armoise
Artemisia herba-alba grows wild on the dry plateaus of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and parts of the Middle East. The word "armoise" is the French name for plants of the Artemisia group. Morocco is the main producer of armoise oil, which is distilled from wild-harvested plants, usually in autumn. In traditional North African practice, the herb is used in teas and home remedies, and it is sometimes added to mint tea.
Armoise belongs to the same genus as wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) and mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris), but its oil has its own distinct character.
Aroma and Composition
The composition of armoise oil varies a lot depending on where the plants grow, as there are several natural "chemotypes". Common key components include:
- Thujones (Alpha and Beta)Giving a fresh, herbal, slightly minty note.
- Camphor and 1,8-CineoleAdding a cool, camphoraceous character.
- Davanone and ChrysanthenoneFound in some chemotypes, contributing fruity and herbal nuances.
The overall scent is powerful, herbal, green and slightly bitter, with a sweet, dry undertone as it dries down.
Applications
- Perfumery, especially fougère, chypre and aromatic masculine fragrances
- Soaps and detergent fragrances
- Aftershaves and men's grooming products
- Herbal and green fragrance accords
- Room sprays and home fragrance
Important Safety Note
Armoise oil can contain significant amounts of thujone, a compound that can affect the nervous system in high doses. It is for use only in fragrances at low levels, in line with IFRA standards and local cosmetic regulations. It must not be taken internally, used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, used on children, or used by people with epilepsy. It should always be highly diluted before skin contact.
Quality Parameters
- Botanical identity and origin
- Chemotype and thujone content by gas chromatography
- Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation
- Aroma evaluation against reference samples
- Screening for adulteration
Packaging and Storage
Supplied in aluminium bottles or drums. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place, away from heat and light.
Armoise blends well with lavender, rosemary, oakmoss, patchouli, cedarwood and bergamot. Because the scent is so strong, perfumers usually start with a fraction of a percent and build up slowly.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Ask for a GC report with every lot of armoise oil, because its thujone and camphor content changes from season to season. In fine fragrance, a little armoise adds a green, herbal lift to fougère and chypre bases; keep the level low and within IFRA guidance.

Most armoise oil comes from Morocco, where the plant grows wild on dry plateaus and is distilled mainly in autumn.
It is mainly a perfumery material. Because it can contain thujone, it should only be used at low, diluted levels and is not suitable for pregnancy, children or people with epilepsy.
We share a GC-MS report and COA for Armoise Oil, which show its main components and help confirm purity.
