Copper in Everyday Life

Many Indian households drink water stored overnight in a copper vessel, a practice known in Ayurveda as Tamra Jal. Copper is also found in foods such as nuts, seeds, whole grains, legumes, dark chocolate, organ meats and shellfish. The body uses copper in several key enzymes, including one called ceruloplasmin, which helps move iron around the body, and superoxide dismutase, which is part of the body's antioxidant defence.

Why Zinc and Copper Go Together

Zinc and copper compete for absorption in the gut. Taking high-dose zinc for a long time can lead to copper deficiency, which may cause anaemia, low white blood cell counts and nerve problems. For this reason, many zinc supplements, especially high-strength ones, include a small amount of copper, often at a ratio of about 10 to 15 parts zinc to 1 part copper.

Formulation Notes

Copper is needed in small amounts, usually around 1 mg to 2 mg of elemental copper per day in supplements. We label copper by elemental content and use pre-mixes to ensure even distribution when it is part of a larger formula.

Safety Notes

Too much copper can be harmful. Many regions set upper limits for daily copper intake (for example, 10 mg per day in the United States and 5 mg per day in the European Union for adults). People with Wilson's disease, a genetic condition in which copper builds up in the body, must not take copper supplements. People with liver disease should also avoid them. Copper supplements should be kept out of reach of children.
