Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) Tablets are supplements that provide GABA, a natural amino acid that works as the main calming messenger in the brain and nervous system. GABA supplements are popular in relaxation, stress and sleep products, especially in Asian and Western markets.

Arizone International manufactures and supplies GABA Tablets, alone or in calming blends, for nutraceutical brands, sleep and stress product companies and private label businesses.

What Is GABA?

In the brain, some chemical messengers excite nerve cells and others quieten them. GABA is the main "brake" of the nervous system, helping to reduce nerve activity. Many prescription sleep and anxiety medicines work by affecting GABA receptors, which is one reason GABA itself attracted interest as a supplement.

GABA also occurs naturally in foods, especially fermented foods such as kimchi, tempeh and some fermented teas. In Japan, GABA-enriched foods and drinks, including GABA chocolate and GABA-rich germinated brown rice, have been popular for years. Japanese "gabaron" tea is processed without oxygen to raise its GABA content.

Sources of GABA for Supplements

  • Fermentation-Derived GABAProduced by lactic acid bacteria, such as Lactobacillus species, fermenting glutamate. This natural process is common for supplement-grade GABA.
  • Synthetic GABAChemically produced, with the same structure.

The Blood-Brain Barrier Question

Scientists still debate how much GABA taken by mouth crosses from the blood into the brain. Some small human studies have reported effects on relaxation, stress markers and sleep, and researchers think GABA may also act through the nervous system of the gut. Brands should therefore make cautious claims.

Applications

  • Relaxation and stress support tablets
  • Sleep blends with L-theanine, magnesium, chamomile or melatonin where permitted
  • Calm-focus formulas with L-theanine
  • Mood and lifestyle wellness products
  • Private label calming ranges

Formulation Notes

Common doses range from 100 mg to 750 mg of GABA per tablet. GABA is a white, slightly sour powder that compresses well. Chewable and fast-melt tablets are also possible.

GABA Regulations by Country

GABA's legal status depends on the market. Here is a general overview of major export destinations:

  • IndiaGABA-based products must fit within FSSAI's health supplement and nutraceutical regulations. The ingredient, dose and claims should be checked against the current permitted lists before launch.
  • United StatesSold as a dietary supplement. Fermentation-derived GABA from L-glutamate has also received a GRAS notice with the FDA, allowing its use in certain foods.
  • CanadaCan be sold as a Natural Health Product once licensed by Health Canada with a Natural Product Number (NPN).
  • European Union and United KingdomStatus is not harmonised. GABA may be treated as a novel food or not accepted in food supplements in some member states, while others allow it. Confirmation with the national authority is essential.
  • Australia and New ZealandComplementary medicines in Australia can only use ingredients permitted by the TGA, so GABA's eligibility should be confirmed with the TGA before export. New Zealand has its own dietary supplement rules.
  • JapanGABA is a well-established food ingredient, found in chocolates, drinks and teas, and is widely used in Foods with Function Claims products for stress and blood pressure.
  • ChinaApproved as a new resource food ingredient in 2009, with a national industrial standard released later.
  • Middle EastSupplements containing GABA need registration with authorities such as the SFDA in Saudi Arabia and the relevant UAE regulators.

Rules change over time, so this overview is a guide only. Before each export order, we check the latest requirements with our client for the destination market.

Safety Notes

GABA is generally well tolerated at supplement doses, but some people report tingling, a slight change in breathing or drowsiness. It may lower blood pressure slightly. It should not be combined with sedatives, sleep medicines, anti-anxiety drugs or alcohol without medical advice. It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Quality Considerations

  • GABA source (fermentation or synthetic) and purity assay
  • Heavy metals, residual solvents and microbiology
  • Tablet hardness, disintegration and uniformity
  • Moisture-protective packaging
  • Batch consistency and Certificate of Analysis
