Sweet Basil Leaves are the dried leaves of Ocimum basilicum, the aromatic herb famous in Italian, Mediterranean and Thai cooking. Dried basil is a staple of the spice trade and is used in seasonings, sauces, pizza toppings, herbal teas and ready meals around the world.
Arizone International supplies Sweet Basil Leaves to herbal, Ayurvedic, food and nutraceutical manufacturers, traders, private label brands and bulk buyers. Grade, cut size, cleaning level, packaging and quantity can all be set to your specification.
Sweet basil is an annual herb of the mint family, closely related to Tulsi (holy basil) but with a milder, sweeter aroma. Its bright green leaves are harvested before flowering, when their aroma is strongest, and then dried at controlled temperatures to keep their colour and essential oil.
The aroma comes from essential oil compounds such as linalool, methyl chavicol (estragole) and eugenol. Dried basil is sold whole, crushed or rubbed, and each grade is chosen according to how it will be used in the finished food.
After harvest, the material is dried in the sun or shade, then cleaned to remove stones, dust, stems and other foreign matter, and sorted by size and quality. It can be supplied whole, cut into smaller pieces for tea and extraction, or milled into coarse or fine powder. For food and ready-to-use products, steam sterilisation can be arranged to bring microbial counts within export limits.
Formulation, dosage, safety assessment, labelling and permitted claims of the finished product must comply with the regulations of the intended market. Basil is a common culinary herb; for food use, finished products should meet local limits for microbiology and pesticide residues.
Sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum) and holy basil or Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum) are different herbs, so state which one you need.
Buyers in the EU and USA check pesticide residues and microbiology closely, so ask for steam-sterilised material and test reports for food use.
Store dried basil sealed and away from light and heat, as its colour and aroma fade quickly once opened.
