Green Papaya Leaves are the dried leaves of Carica papaya, the tropical fruit tree grown across India. Papaya leaf has become a popular herbal ingredient in teas, juices, powders and capsules, and India is one of the world's largest papaya producers.
Arizone International supplies Green Papaya Leaves to herbal, Ayurvedic, food and nutraceutical manufacturers, traders, private label brands and bulk buyers. Grade, cut size, cleaning level, packaging and quantity can all be set to your specification.
The papaya tree is a fast-growing, single-stemmed plant with large, deeply lobed leaves. In India it is grown widely in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka. Young, healthy green leaves are harvested, washed, dried and sorted.
Papaya leaves contain papain and chymopapain (protein-digesting enzymes), the alkaloid carpaine, flavonoids and other plant compounds. The dried leaves have a strong, bitter taste, which is why they are often used in capsules or blended teas.
After harvest, the material is dried in the sun or shade, then cleaned to remove stones, dust, stems and other foreign matter, and sorted by size and quality. It can be supplied whole, cut into smaller pieces for tea and extraction, or milled into coarse or fine powder. For food and ready-to-use products, steam sterilisation can be arranged to bring microbial counts within export limits.
Formulation, dosage, safety assessment, labelling and permitted claims of the finished product must comply with the regulations of the intended market. Papaya leaf products do not replace medical care for dengue or any other illness; they are not recommended during pregnancy, and people taking blood thinners or diabetes medicines should consult their doctor.
Papaya trees are often sprayed, so always ask for pesticide residue tests on the leaves.
The leaves are very bitter, so blends with lemongrass, ginger or mint make teas easier to drink.
For tea bags, a cut size of 2 mm to 4 mm works best, while fine powder of 60 to 80 mesh suits capsules. Papaya leaves lose their green colour if exposed to light and moisture, so store them in lined bags away from sunlight and use them within the shelf life.
