Castor Seeds are the shiny, mottled seeds of Ricinus communis, the castor plant. They are the raw material for castor oil, one of the most versatile vegetable oils in the world, used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, lubricants, paints, plastics and hundreds of industrial products.
Arizone International supplies Castor Seeds in bulk for oil mills, industrial processors, traders and exporters, cleaned and graded to buyer specifications.
India Leads the World
India produces the large majority of the world's castor seed and exports most of the world's castor oil. Gujarat alone accounts for most of India's production, with districts such as Banaskantha, Mehsana, Patan and Kutch among the key growing areas, followed by Rajasthan and Telangana. Castor thrives in hot, dry conditions and grows well where other crops struggle. The crop is actively traded, and castor seed prices are followed closely by the oil and chemical industries.
About the Seed
The castor plant is a fast-growing shrub with large, star-shaped leaves and spiny seed capsules. Each capsule holds three seeds with a beautiful marbled pattern. The seeds contain about 45% to 50% oil, which is unusual because around 90% of its fatty acid content is ricinoleic acid. This rare fatty acid gives castor oil its thickness, stickiness and special chemical properties.
Important Safety Information
Castor seeds contain ricin, a highly toxic protein. Chewing or swallowing seeds can cause serious poisoning, particularly in children and animals. Ricin does not dissolve in oil, so properly pressed and processed castor oil does not contain it; the ricin stays in the leftover seed cake, which must be detoxified before use as fertiliser or feed. Castor seeds are therefore traded only for processing, not for food, and should be handled with gloves and stored away from children and livestock.
Applications of Castor Seed
- Castor Oil ProductionFor cosmetic, pharmaceutical and industrial grades of castor oil.
- OleochemicalsCastor oil is converted into hydrogenated castor oil, sebacic acid, 12-hydroxystearic acid and more.
- Bio-Based PlasticsCastor oil is the raw material for nylon-11 and other bio-based polymers.
- Lubricants and CoatingsIncluding high-performance lubricants, greases, paints and inks.
- Castor MealAfter detoxification, used as organic fertiliser.
Quality Parameters

Packaging and Storage
We pack Castor Seeds in PP or jute bags, typically 50 kg, or in bulk as required. Store in a dry, well-ventilated place, away from food, animal feed and children.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Castor seeds are traded mainly for oil crushing, so the key quality points are oil content, moisture and foreign matter. Store seeds away from food and feed, as whole castor seeds are toxic if eaten.
