Amla, the Indian gooseberry, is the fruit of Phyllanthus emblica (also called Emblica officinalis). It is a small, pale green, sour and astringent fruit that holds a special place in Indian homes and in Ayurveda, where it is considered one of the most important rejuvenating herbs.
Arizone International supplies dried whole Amla, deseeded Amla pieces and Amla slices in bulk for Ayurvedic manufacturers, food companies, hair-care brands, powder and extract processors, wholesalers and exporters.
India's Favourite Sour Fruit
Amla trees grow across India, and the fruit ripens in winter, from about November to February. Pratapgarh in Uttar Pradesh is especially famous for amla and is sometimes called the "amla capital" of India, while the fruit is also grown widely in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Fresh amla is eaten with salt, made into murabba (a sweet preserve), pickles, candy and juice, and is the base of chyawanprash.
The taste is famously complex. The first bite is sour and bitter, but drinking water afterwards leaves a sweet taste in the mouth. Ayurveda says amla contains five of the six tastes, lacking only salty.

What Amla Contains
- Vitamin C, which is naturally high in the fresh fruit
- Hydrolysable tannins such as emblicanins, punigluconin and pedunculagin
- Gallic acid and ellagic acid
- Flavonoids, pectin and fibre
Amla's tannins are thought to help protect its vitamin C, but drying and storage still reduce vitamin C levels, so gentle drying matters.

Packaging and Storage
Packed in poly-lined jute or PP bags, typically 25 kg to 40 kg, or cartons for premium grades. Store in a cool, dry place, as dried amla absorbs moisture easily.
Amla is also valued in traditional hair care. Dried amla pieces are soaked or boiled in coconut or sesame oil to make amla hair oil, and amla powder is mixed with henna to add depth to natural hair colour.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Dried amla pieces are often used for teas, chyawanprash and pickles, while powder suits churnas and capsules. Ask for deseeded pieces if you need a cleaner product for tea blends.
