Adulsa Leaves are the dried leaves of Justicia adhatoda, a shrub better known in Ayurveda as Vasaka and in English as Malabar nut. The leaves are one of the most familiar raw materials in Indian herbal respiratory preparations, and they are traded in bulk for syrups, decoctions, churnas and extracts.
Arizone International supplies Adulsa Leaves to herbal, Ayurvedic, food and nutraceutical manufacturers, traders, private label brands and bulk buyers. Grade, cut size, cleaning level, packaging and quantity can all be set to your specification.
Justicia adhatoda (also listed as Adhatoda vasica) is an evergreen shrub that grows wild and in hedges across India, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Its leaves are large, lance-shaped and bitter, with a strong, slightly unpleasant smell when crushed. They are usually harvested by hand, then dried in the shade to keep their green colour and active content.
The leaves contain quinazoline alkaloids, mainly vasicine and vasicinone, which are used as markers of quality. In Ayurveda, Vasaka leaves are an ingredient in classical preparations such as Vasavaleha, Vasarishta and Vasakasava, and in many modern herbal cough syrups.
After harvest, the material is dried in the sun or shade, then cleaned to remove stones, dust, stems and other foreign matter, and sorted by size and quality. It can be supplied whole, cut into smaller pieces for tea and extraction, or milled into coarse or fine powder. For food and ready-to-use products, steam sterilisation can be arranged to bring microbial counts within export limits.
Formulation, dosage, safety assessment, labelling and permitted claims of the finished product must comply with the regulations of the intended market. Vasaka is traditionally avoided during pregnancy, as vasicine has been reported to stimulate the uterus, so finished products should carry a pregnancy warning.
Shade-dried leaves keep a better green colour and higher vasicine content than sun-dried leaves, so ask how the batch was dried.
Leaves from other shrubs are sometimes mixed in, so ask for identity testing and a foreign-matter limit in the specification.
