Jatamansi Powder is made from the dried roots and rhizomes of Nardostachys jatamansi, a small flowering plant of the high Himalayas also known as spikenard. The reddish-brown powder has a strong, earthy, woody and musky smell, and it is valued in Ayurveda, in hair care and in traditional incense and perfumery.
Arizone International supplies Jatamansi Powder from legal, documented sources to Ayurvedic manufacturers, hair care brands, supplement makers and incense producers.
About Jatamansi
Jatamansi grows at altitudes of about 3,000 to 5,000 metres in the Himalayas of Nepal, India (Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim), Bhutan and Tibet. Its name comes from the Sanskrit "jata", meaning matted hair, because the rhizomes are covered in reddish-brown, hair-like fibres. Spikenard was traded from India to Egypt, Rome and the Middle East in ancient times and is mentioned in the Bible as a costly perfume.
Conservation and Legal Sourcing
Over-harvesting from the wild has made Nardostachys jatamansi critically endangered, and it is listed in CITES Appendix II. Its trade is controlled, and raw material should come from cultivated sources or permitted collection. We supply Jatamansi only with proper origin and CITES documentation.
