Ashwagandha Powder is made from the dried roots of Withania somnifera, one of the most important herbs in Ayurveda. The fine, light-brown powder has an earthy, slightly bitter taste and a faint smell that gives the herb its name: "ashwa" means horse and "gandha" means smell in Sanskrit.
Arizone International supplies root-only Ashwagandha Powder in bulk to supplement brands, Ayurvedic manufacturers, food and beverage companies and exporters, with custom mesh sizes and private label packing.
Where Ashwagandha Comes From
Ashwagandha is a small shrub of the nightshade family. India is the world's main source, and the largest cultivation area is around Mandsaur and Neemuch in Madhya Pradesh, along with parts of Rajasthan. The roots are harvested about five to six months after sowing, usually in winter, then washed, dried and graded. Thicker, whiter roots are considered better quality.
Root-Only Powder
Traditional Ayurvedic use and most research focus on the root. Some low-cost powders include leaves and stems, which change the composition. We supply root-only Ashwagandha Powder, and several European regulators have also advised against using the leaves in supplements.
Key Compounds
- WithanolidesNatural steroidal lactones, such as withaferin A and withanolide A, used as quality markers. Root powder usually contains a small percentage, while extracts are standardised to higher levels.
- AlkaloidsSuch as withanine and somniferine.
- Starch and FibreMake up most of the dried root.
Traditional Use
In Ayurveda, ashwagandha is a Rasayana, a rejuvenating herb, traditionally used to support strength, vitality, calm and restful sleep. It is often taken with warm milk and honey, or combined with Shatavari, Brahmi or Safed Musli.
Applications
- Stress, sleep and vitality supplements
- Capsules, tablets and gummies

Research Interest
Clinical studies, mostly using root extracts, have looked at ashwagandha for stress, sleep quality and exercise performance, with encouraging results. These are research findings, not approved health claims, and labels must follow the rules of each market.
Safety
Ashwagandha is not recommended during pregnancy. People with thyroid or autoimmune conditions, or those taking sedatives or other medicines, should seek medical advice. Rare cases of liver problems have been reported with ashwagandha products.
