Fennel Seed Extract
Part of our Herbal Extracts range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Fennel Seed Extract is made from the aromatic seeds of Foeniculum vulgare, known in India as saunf. Anyone who has eaten at an Indian restaurant has probably tasted it in the small bowl of mukhwas offered after the meal. Its sweet, liquorice-like flavour and long history as a digestive make it a useful ingredient far beyond the dinner table.
Arizone International manufactures, supplies and exports Fennel Seed Extract from India for food, beverage, nutraceutical, Ayurvedic and personal-care companies.
Fennel Grown in India
India is one of the world's leading fennel producers. Most of the crop comes from Gujarat and Rajasthan, and the Unjha market in Gujarat is a key trading centre. Lucknowi saunf, a small, green, very aromatic type, is prized for chewing, while bolder seeds are used for extraction and cooking.
Fennel has travelled widely. Ancient Greeks called it marathon, and the site of the famous battle of Marathon is said to have been named after a field full of fennel. Roman writers recommended it for the eyes, and medieval Europeans hung it over doors to ward off bad luck.
What Is in Fennel Seed Extract?
- Trans-AnetholeThe main aroma compound, responsible for fennel's sweet, anise-like taste.
- Fenchone and EstragoleOther volatile compounds. Fenchone adds a slightly bitter, camphor-like note.
- Flavonoids and Phenolic AcidsIncluding quercetin and rosmarinic acid derivatives.
- Fibre and Fixed OilPresent in whole-seed and lower-ratio extracts.
How Fennel Seed Extract Is Used
In Ayurveda, saunf is considered cooling and gentle, and it is often given to children and new mothers. It is a traditional ingredient in gripe water and in many digestive herbal teas. Modern uses include:
- Digestive capsules, tablets and chewables
- Herbal teas and after-meal mouth fresheners
- Gripe water style preparations
- Flavouring for confectionery, bakery and beverages
- Lactation support blends with fenugreek and shatavari
- Toothpaste, mouthwash and breath fresheners
- Skin-care toners and creams
Grades and Specifications
We supply Fennel Seed Extract as dry powder in ratios such as 4:1 and 10:1, as water-soluble extract for drinks, and as oleoresin for food flavouring. Specifications for moisture, particle size, heavy metals and microbial limits are shared with each batch. Store in closed containers in a cool, dry and dark area.
Safety Notes
Fennel contains estragole, which regulators in some regions have asked producers to limit in products for infants and young children. Brands making baby or pregnancy products should check local guidance carefully. People with allergies to celery, carrot or mugwort may also react to fennel.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Ask for anethole content on the COA, and keep packs sealed to protect aroma.
