Dandelion Root Extract is made from the long taproot of Taraxacum officinale, a plant most gardeners see as a stubborn weed. In European, Chinese and North American herbal traditions, though, the root has been dug up, dried and used as a bitter digestive herb for centuries.

Arizone International supplies Dandelion Root Extract to nutraceutical, herbal tea, beverage and cosmetic manufacturers. We offer ratio extracts and custom specifications in bulk.

The Root and Its Seasons

Every part of the dandelion is edible, but the root is the most valued. It is usually harvested in autumn, when the plant has stored its energy underground and the root is at its fullest. Roots dug in spring tend to be more bitter, while autumn roots contain much more inulin.

The name comes from the French "dent de lion", meaning lion's tooth, a reference to the jagged shape of the leaves. In India, the plant is known as Kanphool or Dugdhapheni and grows in the Himalayan region.

What Dandelion Root Contains

  • InulinA soluble fibre and prebiotic that can be present in large amounts in autumn-harvested roots.
  • Sesquiterpene LactonesIncluding taraxacin-type bitter compounds responsible for the root's bitter taste.
  • TriterpenesSuch as taraxasterol and taraxerol.
  • Phenolic Acids and MineralsIncluding potassium.

Traditional and Commercial Uses

Herbalists have long described dandelion root as a remedy for the liver and digestion. Its bitterness is thought to stimulate appetite and bile flow, which is why it often shows up in digestive bitters and "detox" teas. Roasted dandelion root is also brewed as a caffeine-free coffee substitute and has a pleasant roasted, slightly chocolatey flavour.

  • Liver and digestive wellness capsules and tablets
  • Herbal teas, both plain and roasted
  • Coffee alternatives and instant beverages
  • Prebiotic and gut-health blends
  • Detox formulas with milk thistle, burdock or artichoke
  • Digestive bitters and tinctures
  • Skin-care creams and cleansers

Forms and Specifications

We supply Dandelion Root Extract as a brown, free-flowing powder in 4:1, 10:1 or custom ratios. Extracts standardised to inulin or total polysaccharides can be prepared on request. For beverages we can suggest water-soluble grades with good dispersibility.

Dandelion root extract is hygroscopic, especially when inulin content is high, so keep it in sealed, moisture-proof packaging in a cool, dry place.

Safety Notes

People allergic to plants in the daisy family may react to dandelion. Because dandelion is traditionally used as a diuretic, those taking diuretics, lithium or blood-thinning medicines should talk to a healthcare professional first. Finished products should carry suitable label advice for their market.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators

Ask for inulin or bitter compound content on the COA.
