Corn Silk Extract
Part of our Herbal Extracts range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Corn Silk Extract is made from the fine, thread-like strands you find under the husk of a corn cob. Most people pull them off and throw them away. In traditional herbal systems, however, those silky strands have been collected, dried and brewed into tea for hundreds of years.
Arizone International supplies Corn Silk Extract from India for nutraceutical, herbal tea, beverage and cosmetic manufacturers. We offer ratio and custom grades in bulk quantities.
What Is Corn Silk?
Corn silk is the collection of stigmas of the female maize flower (Zea mays). Each strand is connected to a single kernel on the cob, which is why a well-filled cob always has plenty of silk. For herbal use, the silk is collected before or around pollination, while it is still soft and pale yellow-green, then dried carefully to keep its colour.
Native American communities used corn silk long before European contact. It also appears in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is known as Yu Mi Xu, and in folk practice in Turkey and parts of Europe. Today it is one of the more common ingredients in herbal teas for the urinary tract.
Main Constituents
- FlavonoidsIncluding maysin, a flavone glycoside that is typical of corn silk.
- PotassiumNaturally present in good amounts in dried silk.
- PolysaccharidesWater-soluble compounds that contribute to the mild, slightly sweet taste of corn silk tea.
- Phenolic Acids and SaponinsPresent in smaller amounts.
Applications of Corn Silk Extract
Corn silk has traditionally been used as a mild diuretic herb. Supplement brands generally place it in urinary and kidney wellness blends, often alongside cranberry, gokshura, punarnava or dandelion. Other uses include:
- Herbal tea bags and instant tea powders
- Capsules and tablets for urinary tract wellness
- Detox and water-balance formulas
- Functional beverages, especially in East Asian markets where corn silk tea is popular
- Skin-care products, including toners and soothing creams
- Hair-care formulations
In Korea, roasted corn silk tea is sold widely as a caffeine-free everyday drink. That market has helped corn silk become better known outside its traditional regions.
Things to Keep in Mind
Because corn silk is traditionally used for its diuretic effect, finished products should advise people who take diuretics, blood pressure medicine or potassium supplements to consult a healthcare professional. Label claims must follow the regulations in the target market.
Quality and Specifications
Maize is grown widely in India, which gives us a good supply of raw silk during the harvest season. We clean and dry the material, test it for identity and moisture, and check the finished extract for heavy metals and microbial counts. Because corn is a crop where pesticide use is common, pesticide residue testing can be done on request. Corn Silk Extract is normally a light brown powder with a mild, grassy smell.
