Thyme Oil is a strong, warm, spicy and herbaceous essential oil steam distilled from the flowering tops and leaves of Thymus vulgaris and Thymus zygis. It is one of the most powerful essential oils and is widely used in oral care, food flavours, household cleaners, animal feed additives, natural personal care and aromatherapy.
Arizone International supplies Red Thyme, White Thyme and chemotype Thyme Oils for oral-care brands, flavour houses, feed additive companies and natural product manufacturers.
About Thyme
Thyme is a small, woody herb of the mint family native to the western Mediterranean. It has tiny grey-green leaves and pale pink or purple flowers. In ancient Greece, thyme was burned as incense in temples, and Roman soldiers bathed in thyme water for courage. Spain is the main producer of thyme oil, followed by Morocco, France and other Mediterranean countries. In India, a related wild species (Thymus serpyllum, known as ban ajwain) grows in the Himalayas.
Red and White Thyme
- Red Thyme OilThe crude oil after first distillation. It has a reddish-brown colour and a strong, warm, spicy scent.
- White Thyme OilRed thyme oil that has been redistilled (rectified), giving a pale, cleaner oil with a slightly softer scent.
Chemotypes
Thyme has several chemotypes. The thymol type is the most common and most powerful. The linalool type and geraniol type are much gentler and are often used in aromatherapy and skin care. The thujanol type is also used in French aromatherapy. Please specify the chemotype you need.
Aroma and Composition (Thymol Type)
- ThymolUsually 35% to 55%, giving the strong, warm, medicinal scent.
- p-Cymene and Gamma-TerpinenePrecursors of thymol, adding freshness.
- Carvacrol, Linalool and BorneolPresent in smaller amounts.
Applications
- Mouthwash and toothpaste (thymol is a classic oral-care ingredient)
- Food flavours for meat products, sauces and seasonings
- Household cleaners and natural disinfectant products, subject to regulations
- Animal and poultry feed additives
- Natural personal care, soaps and foot care
- Aromatherapy blends (gentle chemotypes preferred)
Research Interest
Thymol has been widely studied for antimicrobial activity and is used in some registered mouthwashes and disinfectant products. These are research findings and specific product uses, not general medical claims.
Safety and Dilution
Thymol-type thyme oil is a strong irritant to skin and mucous membranes and must be well diluted before use. It should not be used on children, during pregnancy or by people with high blood pressure. Linalool-type thyme is gentler but should still be diluted. Not for internal use except as a regulated flavour. Keep out of reach of children.
