Thuja Oil, also called Cedar Leaf Oil, is a sharp, fresh, herbaceous and camphoraceous essential oil steam distilled from the leaves and twigs of Thuja occidentalis, the eastern white cedar or arborvitae. It is used mainly in perfumery, in household and insect-repellent products, and in speciality applications. Because it is very high in thujone, it must be used with great care.
Arizone International supplies Thuja Oil for perfumers, household product manufacturers and speciality users, with full safety documentation.
About Thuja
Thuja occidentalis is an evergreen conifer native to eastern Canada and the north-eastern United States. It is widely planted as a hedge and ornamental tree around the world. The name "arborvitae" means "tree of life" in Latin, a name given after French explorers in the 16th century reportedly learned from First Nations peoples to use a tea from the tree to treat scurvy. In India, related Thuja and Platycladus species (morpankhi) are grown as ornamental plants.
The oil is produced mainly in Canada and the USA from leaves and twigs.
Aroma and Composition
- Alpha-ThujoneUsually the main component, often 45% to 60%, giving a sharp, fresh, herbal scent.
- Beta-ThujoneOften around 5% to 10%.
- Fenchone and CamphorAdding a cool, camphoraceous note.
- Sabinene and Bornyl AcetateContributing freshness.
Applications
- Perfumery, in small amounts, for fresh, herbal and woody accords
- Household cleaners and room fresheners
- Insect-repellent and moth-repellent products, subject to regulations
- Speciality and industrial fragrances
Important Safety Warning
Thuja oil is one of the highest thujone-containing essential oils. Thujone is a neurotoxin that can cause seizures and other serious effects at relatively low doses. Thuja oil must never be taken internally, used in aromatherapy massage, used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, used on children, or used by people with epilepsy. In fragrances, it must only be used at very low levels within IFRA standards and local regulations. It must be stored securely and clearly labelled. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Please read the SDS before use.
Thuja Oil vs Cedarwood Oil
Thuja oil is distilled from leaves and is very different from cedarwood oils, which are distilled from wood and are rich in safe woody sesquiterpenes such as cedrol and cedrene. Please make sure to specify the correct oil.
Quality Parameters
- Botanical identity (Thuja occidentalis) and plant part
- Thujone content by gas chromatography

- Aroma evaluation
Packaging and Storage

Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Thuja oil should be used only at very low levels in fragrance and household products because of its high thujone content. Keep it in locked storage, and never use it in aromatherapy or massage products.
