Texas Cedarwood Oil
Part of our Oils range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Texas Cedarwood Oil is a dry, woody, smoky and slightly sweet essential oil steam distilled from the wood of Juniperus ashei (also known as Juniperus mexicana), a juniper tree of Texas and northern Mexico. Despite its name, it is not a true cedar. It is one of the most widely used woody materials in perfumery, soaps, household products and insect-repellent products, and it is an important source of cedrol and cedrene.
Arizone International supplies Texas Cedarwood Oil for fragrance houses, soap and household product manufacturers, and aroma chemical users.
About Texas Cedarwood
Juniperus ashei, commonly called Ashe juniper or "mountain cedar", grows on the limestone hills of central Texas, the Edwards Plateau and parts of northern Mexico. It is a fast-spreading tree, and landowners often clear it to restore grasslands. The wood from this clearing is chipped and steam distilled, which makes Texas cedarwood oil a useful by-product of land management. The oil is produced mainly in Texas.
Not a True Cedar
Texas and Virginian cedarwood oils both come from juniper trees. True cedar oils, such as Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica) and Himalayan cedar (Cedrus deodara), come from the Cedrus genus and have a different, sweeter composition. Texas cedarwood has a drier, smokier, more pencil-shaving-like scent.
Aroma and Composition
- Alpha-Cedrene and Beta-CedreneGiving a dry, woody note.
- CedrolUsually 20% or more, adding a soft, woody, long-lasting character.
- ThujopseneOften a major component, adding a woody, slightly smoky nuance.
The overall scent is dry, woody and smoky, reminiscent of cedar chests and pencil shavings.
