Mugwort Oil is a strong, herbaceous, bitter-green and camphoraceous essential oil steam distilled from the leaves and flowering tops of Artemisia vulgaris and related Artemisia species. It is used mainly in perfumery, in small amounts, and in traditional and speciality products. Because it can contain thujone, it must be used with care.

Arizone International supplies Mugwort Oil for perfumers, fragrance houses and speciality product manufacturers, with full safety documentation.

About Mugwort

Mugwort is a tall, hardy perennial that grows across Europe, Asia and North America, often along roadsides and waste ground. Its leaves are dark green on top and silvery-white underneath. In India, related species such as Artemisia nilagirica (Indian wormwood, known as nagdona or davana in some regions) grow in the hills and are used in traditional remedies.

Mugwort has a long and rich history. In medieval Europe, it was used to flavour beer before hops, and travellers put mugwort leaves in their shoes to ease tired feet. In Chinese and Japanese traditional medicine, dried mugwort (moxa) is burned in the practice of moxibustion. In Korea and Japan, young mugwort leaves are used in rice cakes and soups.

Aroma and Composition

Mugwort oil's composition varies greatly with origin and chemotype. Common components include:

  • Thujone (Alpha and Beta)Present in many types, giving a sharp, herbal note.
  • Camphor and 1,8-CineoleAdding a cool, camphoraceous freshness.
  • Beta-Caryophyllene, Germacrene D and BorneolContributing warmth and depth.

The overall scent is strong, green, bitter, herbal and slightly sweet as it dries down.

Applications

  • Perfumery, adding green, herbal and bitter accents to chypre and fougère fragrances
  • Speciality herbal fragrances
  • Traditional and folk preparations, subject to local regulations
  • Research and speciality uses

Important Safety Note

Mugwort oil can contain significant amounts of thujone, which is toxic to the nervous system in higher doses and can cause seizures. It must not be taken internally and must not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, on children, or by people with epilepsy. It should only be used at very low, diluted levels in fragrances, within IFRA standards and local regulations. People allergic to the daisy family (Asteraceae), including ragweed, may also react to mugwort. Keep out of reach of children.

Blending Tips

In small amounts, mugwort blends well with clary sage, lavender, patchouli, cedarwood, oakmoss and rosemary, adding a distinctive green bitterness.
