Litsea Cubeba Oil, also called May Chang Oil, is a fresh, sweet, intensely lemony essential oil steam distilled from the small, pepper-like fruits of Litsea cubeba, a tree of the laurel family. It is one of the richest natural sources of citral and is widely used in perfumery, soaps, household products, aromatherapy and the production of natural citral.
Arizone International supplies Litsea Cubeba Oil for fragrance houses, soap and household product manufacturers, aromatherapy brands and aroma chemical users.
About Litsea Cubeba
Litsea cubeba is a small, fast-growing tree native to southern China, Taiwan, Southeast Asia and the eastern Himalayas. In India, it grows in the north-eastern states, including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Nagaland, where it is known locally by several names and its fruits are sometimes used as a spice. China is by far the largest producer of litsea cubeba oil in the world.
The name "cubeba" refers to the fruit's resemblance to cubeb pepper, but the two plants are not related. The name "May Chang" comes from Chinese.
Aroma and Composition
- Citral (Geranial and Neral)Usually 65% to 80%, giving the strong, sweet lemon scent.
- LimoneneAdding a fresh citrus lift.
- Methyl Heptenone, Linalool and CitronellalMinor components adding depth.
Its scent is sweeter, softer and fruitier than lemongrass, and it is often described as a mix of lemon and lemon sherbet.
Applications
- Perfumery, especially fresh citrus and cologne accords
- Soaps, detergents, household cleaners and air fresheners
- Candles and home fragrance
- Aromatherapy blends for a fresh, uplifting mood
- Natural source of citral for the production of ionones and vitamin A
- Food flavours, where permitted
Safety and Dilution
Because of its high citral content, Litsea Cubeba Oil can irritate or sensitise the skin and must always be diluted. IFRA sets limits for citral in cosmetics, and citral is a listed allergen that must be declared on labels in the EU above certain levels. Not recommended during pregnancy. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children. Not for internal use except as a regulated food flavour.
Blending Tips
Litsea cubeba blends well with lavender, rosemary, basil, ginger, bergamot, orange, grapefruit, geranium, ylang-ylang and cedarwood.
Quality Parameters
- Botanical identity (Litsea cubeba fruit)
- Citral content by gas chromatography
- Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation
- Aroma evaluation
- Screening for synthetic citral adulteration
Packaging and Storage
Supplied in aluminium bottles, HDPE containers or drums. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place.
In candle making and soap, litsea is often chosen over lemongrass because its sweeter lemon note holds well and blends easily with lavender and vanilla. It is also a common base for "lemon" room sprays.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Litsea cubeba is a cost-effective natural lemon note for soaps, candles and cleaners. Because citral can irritate skin, keep levels within IFRA limits in skin products and declare citral as an allergen where required.
