Lime Oil is a fresh, sharp, zesty and sweet citrus essential oil obtained from the peel or whole fruit of lime, mainly Citrus aurantifolia (Key or Mexican lime) and Citrus latifolia (Persian or Tahiti lime). It is one of the most important flavour oils in the world, best known as a key ingredient in cola drinks, and it is also used in perfumery, cosmetics and aromatherapy.
Arizone International supplies Lime Oil in distilled and cold-pressed grades for beverage companies, flavour houses, fragrance and cosmetic manufacturers, and aromatherapy brands.
Distilled vs Cold-Pressed Lime Oil
- Distilled Lime OilMade by steam distilling crushed whole limes or lime juice pulp. It has a sharp, sweet, candy-like "lime soda" flavour and is the classic flavour used in colas and soft drinks. It contains very little furocoumarin and is not phototoxic.
- Cold-Pressed Lime OilPressed from the peel, with a fresh, green, juicy aroma closer to the fresh fruit. It is used in perfumery and premium flavours. It contains furocoumarins and is phototoxic.
Please specify which grade you need, as they differ significantly in aroma, use and safety.
About Lime
Limes are native to Southeast Asia and were spread by traders to India, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas. Mexico, Peru, Brazil and India are among the largest producers today. In India, small, seeded limes (kagzi nimbu) are widely grown and used in cooking, pickles and drinks such as nimbu pani. Lime oil for export is mainly produced in Mexico, Peru and Brazil as a by-product of the juice industry.
Aroma and Composition
- LimoneneThe main component, usually 40% to 60%.
- Gamma-Terpinene and Beta-PineneAdding freshness.
- Citral (Geranial and Neral)Present in cold-pressed oil, giving a lemony note.
- Alpha-Terpineol and 1,4-CineolePresent in distilled oil, formed during distillation, giving its characteristic candy-like note.
Applications

- Confectionery, desserts and food flavours
- Cocktails and alcoholic beverages
- Perfumes, colognes and body sprays
- Shower gels, shampoos and body care
- Aromatherapy blends and household products
Safety and Dilution
Cold-pressed lime oil is strongly phototoxic, and IFRA sets strict limits for its use in leave-on skin products. Skin treated with it should not be exposed to sunlight for at least 12 hours. Distilled lime oil is not phototoxic. Both types oxidise quickly and should be stored properly and diluted before skin use. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators
