Lemon Balm Oil
Part of our Oils range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Lemon Balm Oil is a fresh, lemony, sweet and herbaceous essential oil obtained from the leaves of Melissa officinalis, a gentle herb of the mint family. Genuine lemon balm oil is one of the rarest and most expensive essential oils because the plant yields extremely little oil. It is used in premium aromatherapy, skin care and fine perfumery.
Arizone International supplies genuine Lemon Balm Oil in limited quantities, as well as more affordable lemon balm blends, for aromatherapy brands, skin care companies and perfumers.
About Lemon Balm
Lemon balm is a perennial herb native to southern Europe, the Mediterranean and western Asia. Its bright green, heart-shaped leaves smell strongly of lemon when crushed. The herb has been cultivated since ancient times and was a favourite in monastery gardens. It is a key herb in Carmelite water, a famous herbal tonic first made by Carmelite nuns in the 17th century. Bees love the plant, and its name "Melissa" comes from the Greek word for honeybee.
Why Is Lemon Balm Oil So Expensive?
The oil yield from lemon balm leaves is very low, often only about 0.01% to 0.2%. This means several tonnes of fresh herb may be needed to produce just one kilogram of oil. As a result, genuine lemon balm oil is very costly, and much of the "melissa oil" in the market is adulterated or blended with cheaper lemon-scented oils such as lemongrass, citronella or litsea cubeba. Buyers should always ask for a GC report.
Aroma and Composition
- Geranial and Neral (Citral)Giving the fresh lemon scent.
- Beta-Caryophyllene and Caryophyllene OxideAdding a soft, herbal, slightly woody note.
- Citronellal and Germacrene DContributing to the complexity.
Genuine lemon balm oil usually contains a notable amount of beta-caryophyllene, which helps distinguish it from pure citral-based oils.
Applications
- Premium aromatherapy blends for calm and relaxation
- Skin care, especially for sensitive or blemish-prone skin
- Fine perfumery and natural perfumes
- Luxury bath and body products
- Lip and cold-sore care products, subject to regulations
Traditional Use and Research
Lemon balm herb has been used traditionally for calm and restful sleep, and the European Medicines Agency recognises it as a traditional herbal medicine for mild stress and sleep. Lemon balm extracts have also been studied for their effects on cold sores. These are herb-related traditional uses and research, not claims for the essential oil.
Safety and Dilution
Lemon Balm Oil should always be highly diluted, as its citral content can irritate and sensitise skin. IFRA limits apply. It may affect thyroid function in high doses and is not recommended during pregnancy. People with glaucoma should seek advice. Not for internal use. Keep out of reach of children.
