Arizone International supplies high-quality Lemongrass Essential Oil to cosmetic manufacturers, personal care brands, aromatherapy businesses, wholesalers, distributors, exporters and private label companies.
What Is Lemongrass Essential Oil?
Lemongrass Essential Oil is a concentrated aromatic oil obtained by steam distillation of the fresh or partly dried leaves of lemongrass. Two main types are traded. East Indian or Cochin lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus) is native to India, and Kerala was historically one of the world's most important sources of lemongrass oil, shipped from the port of Kochi. West Indian lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) is the type used in cooking in Southeast Asia and is also distilled for oil. Today lemongrass is grown in several Indian states, including Kerala, Karnataka, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh and the north-east.
The oil carries the fresh, green, lemon-like aroma of the grass. It can be used on its own in suitable products or blended with carrier oils, botanical ingredients and other aromatic components.
Natural Aromatic Profile
- Fresh Citrus-Grass AromaA distinctive blend of bright citrus notes and fresh green character.
- Rich in CitralCitral (a mix of geranial and neral) usually makes up about 65% to 85% of the oil, giving its strong lemon scent. Citral is also a raw material for making other aroma chemicals and vitamin A.
- Other ComponentsIncluding geraniol, myrcene and limonene in smaller amounts.
- Versatile Formulation IngredientSuitable for cosmetic, personal care, fragrance and aromatic products.
Applications
- Aromatherapy blends and diffuser oils
- Soaps, body washes and personal care products
- Fragrance blends, candles and home fragrance
- Natural insect-repellent products
- Natural cleaning products
- Flavouring in foods and beverages (food grade, where permitted)
- Private label product projects
Final formulation, concentration, labelling and safety must comply with regulations in the intended market.
Safety and Dilution
Because of its high citral content, lemongrass oil can irritate or sensitise skin if used undiluted or at high levels. It should always be diluted in skin products and used within the limits recommended by IFRA (International Fragrance Association) standards. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children. Pregnant women should seek advice before aromatherapy use.
Quality & Processing Considerations
- Species identity (C. flexuosus or C. citratus)
- Citral content by gas chromatography
- Specific gravity, refractive index and solubility
- Characteristic aroma and colour
- Screening for adulteration with synthetic citral
- Batch consistency, suitable packaging and storage
