Ginger Grass Oil is a fresh, sweet, grassy and slightly spicy essential oil steam distilled from the leaves of Cymbopogon martinii var. sofia. It is a close relative of palmarosa oil and has a softer, less rosy and more herbaceous scent. It is an Indian essential oil used in perfumery, soaps, cosmetics and aromatherapy.
Arizone International supplies Indian Ginger Grass Oil for fragrance houses, soap and cosmetic manufacturers, and aromatherapy brands.
Ginger Grass vs Palmarosa
Cymbopogon martinii has two main varieties. The motia variety gives palmarosa oil, which is rich in geraniol and has a sweet, rosy scent. The sofia variety gives ginger grass oil, which has a different composition, with less geraniol and more components such as perillyl alcohol and trans-p-mentha-dienols. Despite the name, ginger grass is not related to ginger; it is called so because some people find a faint ginger-like note in its scent.
About the Plant
Ginger grass is a tall, aromatic perennial grass native to India. It grows wild in the dry forests of central and western India, including Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat. Traditionally, the wild grass was harvested and distilled in small, local stills. Ginger grass is part of India's long tradition of aromatic grasses, along with lemongrass, citronella and palmarosa.
