Costmary Oil is a rare, aromatic essential oil steam distilled from the leaves of Tanacetum balsamita (also known as Balsamita major or Chrysanthemum balsamita), a perennial herb of the daisy family. It has a sweet, minty, balsamic and slightly camphoraceous scent and is used mainly in speciality perfumery and herbal fragrance products.

Arizone International helps buyers source Costmary Oil for perfumers, natural fragrance brands and speciality cosmetic companies.

About Costmary

Costmary is native to western Asia and the Caucasus and was brought to Europe centuries ago, where it became a common cottage garden herb. It has long, silvery-green leaves and small, button-like yellow flowers. The leaves smell of mint and balsam when crushed.

In England, costmary was called "Bible leaf" because people used its long leaves as bookmarks in their Bibles, and its fresh scent kept them alert during long church services. It was also known as "alecost" because it was used to flavour and preserve ale before hops became common. The dried leaves were placed in linen cupboards to keep them fresh.

Aroma and Composition

The composition of costmary oil varies depending on the chemotype and growing region. Common components include:

  • CarvoneIn some chemotypes, giving a spearmint-like note.
  • CamphorIn others, giving a fresh, camphoraceous character.
  • Beta-ThujonePresent in some chemotypes.
  • 1,8-Cineole and Other TerpenesAdding freshness.

The overall scent is sweet, minty, herbal and balsamic.

Applications

  • Speciality perfumery and herbal fragrance accords
  • Natural and botanical perfumes
  • Potpourri, linen sprays and sachets
  • Herbal soaps
  • Historical and craft brewing research, in very small amounts, subject to regulation

Important Safety Note

Some chemotypes of costmary oil can contain thujone and camphor, which can affect the nervous system at high doses. The oil must be used only at low levels in fragrances, within IFRA standards and local regulations. It is not for internal use and should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, on children, or by people with epilepsy. People allergic to the daisy family may react. Always dilute before skin contact and keep out of reach of children.

Availability

Costmary oil is produced only in small quantities, so availability is limited and batches may vary in composition. We recommend requesting a sample and a GC report before placing a larger order.

Quality Parameters

  • Botanical identity (Tanacetum balsamita)
  • Chemotype and gas chromatography profile, including thujone
  • Specific gravity and refractive index
  • Aroma evaluation

Packaging and Storage

Supplied in small aluminium or amber glass bottles. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place.

Perfumers who work with it usually pair it with lavender or rosemary.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators

Because costmary oil is produced only in small batches, its composition can change noticeably from one lot to the next. Ask for a sample and GC report before each order, and keep a reference sample of your approved lot for comparison. In perfumery, a trace of costmary adds a sweet, minty-balsamic note to herbal and lavender accords.
