Citronella Java Oil is a fresh, lemony and slightly woody essential oil steam distilled from the leaves of Cymbopogon winterianus, the Java type of citronella grass. It is considered the higher-quality form of citronella oil, richer in citronellal and geraniol, and it is used in insect-repellent products, soaps, detergents, household products and perfumery.
Arizone International supplies Citronella Java Oil for repellent and household product manufacturers, soap and detergent companies, and aroma chemical users.
Java vs Ceylon Citronella
Two types of citronella oil are traded:
- Java Citronella (Cymbopogon winterianus)Higher in citronellal, geraniol and citronellol, with a fresher, sweeter scent. Preferred in perfumery and for producing natural aroma chemicals.
- Ceylon Citronella (Cymbopogon nardus)Lower in these compounds and higher in camphene and borneol, with a harsher, woodier scent. Mostly used in cheaper household products.
Citronella in India
India is a significant producer of Java citronella. It is grown in Assam and other north-eastern states, as well as in Odisha, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and parts of South India. Indian government programmes, including the CSIR Aroma Mission, have promoted citronella cultivation among farmers because it grows on marginal land, needs little water and gives several harvests a year. China, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Vietnam are other producers.

Regulatory Note on Repellents
Citronella oil is a well-known natural insect repellent. However, products that claim to repel insects are regulated. In the EU, citronella's approval as a biocidal active substance has been under review, and in the US, the EPA regulates repellent claims. In India, repellent products are regulated under the Insecticides Act. Please check the rules in your market before making repellent claims.
Safety and Dilution
Citronella Java Oil can cause skin irritation or sensitisation in some people and should always be diluted. IFRA restrictions apply to citronellal, geraniol and citronellol. Avoid during pregnancy, keep away from eyes and out of reach of children. Not for internal use.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators
For repellent products, check local registration rules before making any claim, as citronella is regulated differently in the EU, US and India. For soaps and cleaners, Java citronella gives a fresher, sweeter scent than the Ceylon type.
