Cade Oil is a dark, smoky and tar-like oil obtained by the destructive distillation of the wood of Juniperus oxycedrus, the prickly juniper or cade juniper of the Mediterranean. It has a strong, smoky, leathery and phenolic aroma and is used in perfumery, specialist scalp-care products, soaps and veterinary applications.
Arizone International supplies rectified Cade Oil for fragrance houses, soap and shampoo manufacturers, and speciality cosmetic brands.
About Cade Juniper
Juniperus oxycedrus is a shrub or small tree that grows around the Mediterranean, in Spain, Portugal, France, Morocco, Turkey and the Balkans. It is related to the common juniper used for gin, but its heartwood is used in a very different way. The wood and branches are heated in closed ovens without air, which breaks down the wood and produces a thick, dark tar. This crude tar is then refined by steam or vacuum distillation to produce rectified cade oil, which is lighter and safer to use.
Cade oil has been used for centuries in the Mediterranean in folk remedies for the skin and scalp, in veterinary care for livestock and dogs, and in traditional soaps.
Aroma and Composition
- PhenolsSuch as guaiacol, cresols and ethylguaiacol, giving the smoky, phenolic character.
- Cadinene and Other SesquiterpenesAdding a woody, dry depth.
The overall scent is smoky, tarry, leathery and warm, similar to birch tar but somewhat drier and more woody.
Applications
- Leather, tobacco and smoky accords in fine perfumery
- Masculine fragrances and incense-type notes
- Specialist anti-dandruff shampoos and scalp-care soaps, where permitted
- Traditional tar soaps
- Veterinary skin-care products, subject to local regulations
Important Safety Note
Crude cade oil can contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), some of which are known to be harmful. For this reason, IFRA and the EU allow only refined (rectified) cade oil in fragrances and cosmetics, and they set strict limits on specific PAHs such as benzo[a]pyrene. Only rectified, tested grades should be used in consumer products. Cade oil should be highly diluted, kept away from eyes, and must never be taken internally. It is not suitable during pregnancy or for young children. Keep out of reach of children.
Blending Tips
A tiny amount of cade oil adds a smoky, leathery depth to blends with vetiver, labdanum, patchouli, cedarwood, oakmoss and tobacco notes.
Quality Parameters
- Botanical identity (Juniperus oxycedrus)
- Rectified grade with PAH test report
- Specific gravity and refractive index
- Colour and aroma evaluation
- Phenol content where required
Packaging and Storage
Supplied in aluminium bottles, HDPE containers or drums. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place. Cade oil stains, so handle carefully.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Only rectified cade oil should be used in consumer products, so ask for a PAH test report with each lot. Use tiny amounts, because cade's smoky note quickly dominates a blend, and keep it away from clothes and surfaces, as it stains.
