Betel Leaf Oil is a warm, spicy and slightly smoky essential oil steam distilled from the fresh leaves of Piper betle, the climbing vine whose heart-shaped leaves are known across India as paan. It is a traditional Indian aromatic oil used in flavours, pan masala, mouth fresheners, perfumery, attars and personal care products.

Arizone International supplies Betel Leaf Oil for flavour houses, mouth freshener and pan masala manufacturers, perfumers, cosmetic brands and exporters.

About Betel Leaf

Piper betle belongs to the pepper family, like black pepper. It is grown in shaded gardens called barojas in West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Assam and other states. Many local varieties exist, such as Bangla, Calcutta, Magahi, Banarasi and Meetha paan, each with a different taste and aroma. The leaves are chewed after meals in India and across South and Southeast Asia, often with areca nut, lime and spices, and they also play an important part in weddings, pujas and hospitality.

The oil yield from betel leaves is low, so the oil is relatively costly. Leaves that are slightly damaged or unsuitable for market sale are sometimes used for distillation, which helps reduce waste.

Aroma and Composition

  • PhenolsSuch as chavibetol, eugenol and chavicol, giving the warm, spicy, clove-like character.
  • Allylpyrocatechol and Related CompoundsStudied for their antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.
  • TerpenesAdding freshness.

The composition varies by variety and region. The overall scent is green, spicy, peppery and phenolic, very recognisable to anyone who has tasted fresh paan.

Applications

  • Mouth fresheners, mukhwas and paan-flavoured products
  • Paan flavour in sweets, ice creams and beverages
  • Toothpastes and oral-care products
  • Attars, perfumes and oriental fragrance accords
  • Soaps and personal care products
  • Traditional and Ayurvedic preparations

Traditional Use

In Ayurveda, tambula (betel leaf) has been used traditionally to support digestion and freshen the breath. Laboratory studies have looked at betel leaf extracts and oil for antimicrobial and antioxidant effects, but these are research findings, not approved health claims.

Safety and Dilution

Betel leaf oil is strong and should be used at low levels. It must be diluted before skin contact and may irritate sensitive skin because of its phenol content. For flavour use, only food-grade oil should be used within local food regulations. Chewing betel quid with areca nut and tobacco is linked with serious health risks; betel leaf oil is a flavour and fragrance ingredient and should not be seen as a health product. Keep out of reach of children.

Quality Parameters

  • Botanical identity (Piper betle) and variety
  • Gas chromatography profile
  • Specific gravity and refractive index
  • Aroma and flavour evaluation
  • Food-grade compliance where required

Packaging and Storage

Supplied in aluminium bottles or HDPE containers. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators

Betel leaf oil is very strong, so it is usually diluted in a carrier or flavour base before being added to mukhwas, sweets or paan flavours. Taste trials at very low levels help find the right balance between freshness and pungency.

Betel Leaf Oil is used mainly for paan flavours in mouth fresheners, mukhwas, sweets and ice creams, as well as in oral care, attars and some personal care products.

Paan leaves give very little oil when distilled, so a large quantity of fresh leaves is needed for a small amount of oil.
