Angelica Root Oil
Part of our Oils range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Angelica Root Oil is a precious essential oil steam distilled from the roots of Angelica archangelica, a tall, aromatic plant of the carrot family. It has an earthy, musky, herbaceous and slightly peppery aroma and is highly valued in fine perfumery and as a flavour ingredient in famous liqueurs and gins.
Arizone International supplies Angelica Root Oil for perfumers, flavour houses, spirit and liqueur producers, cosmetic brands and aromatherapy businesses.
The "Angel's Herb"
Angelica grows wild in cool, damp places in northern Europe, Scandinavia, Russia and the Himalayas. It can reach two metres tall, with large umbrella-shaped clusters of greenish flowers. Its name comes from medieval legends that an angel revealed the plant as a remedy during the plague. The candied stems were once a popular sweet in Europe, and the roots and seeds became important flavourings. Today angelica root is a key botanical in many gin recipes and in herbal liqueurs such as Chartreuse and Bénédictine.
Aroma and Composition
- MonoterpenesSuch as alpha-pinene, delta-3-carene and limonene, giving fresh, peppery top notes.
- Macrocyclic LactonesSuch as pentadecanolide, which give a musky, animalic depth.
- Coumarins and FurocoumarinsIncluding bergapten, present in the oil.
The overall scent is earthy, musky and herbaceous, with a peppery lift, and it adds richness and natural diffusion to perfumes.
Applications
- Fine perfumery, especially chypre, fougère and musky accords
- Flavouring for gin, liqueurs and bitters
- Food flavours, where permitted
- Aromatherapy blends, used in very small amounts
- Luxury cosmetics and natural perfumes
Important Safety Note: Phototoxicity
Angelica root oil contains furocoumarins that can make the skin highly sensitive to sunlight. When used on skin that is then exposed to UV light, it may cause redness, burns or dark patches. IFRA standards set maximum use levels for angelica root oil in leave-on products, and the skin should not be exposed to sun for several hours after use. The oil should always be diluted and should not be used during pregnancy or on children. Not for internal use except in approved flavour applications.
Quality Parameters
- Botanical identity (Angelica archangelica root, not seed)
- Gas chromatography profile, including furocoumarin levels where required
- Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation
- Aroma evaluation
- Screening for adulteration
Root vs Seed Oil
Angelica seed oil is also produced and has a lighter, fresher aroma. Root oil is deeper and more musky, and is usually more expensive. Please specify which one you require.
Packaging and Storage
Supplied in aluminium or amber glass bottles. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place, away from air, which can darken and thicken the oil.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Angelica root oil is powerful, so start with a trace amount in perfume trials. For leave-on skin products, check the IFRA limit for phototoxicity before finalising the formula, and keep the oil in a full, tightly closed bottle, as exposure to air darkens and thickens it.
