Amyris Oil is a woody, sweet and balsamic essential oil steam distilled from the wood of Amyris balsamifera, a small tree from Haiti, Jamaica and other Caribbean islands. It is often called West Indian sandalwood because of its soft, woody scent, although it is not related to true sandalwood. It is widely used as an affordable woody base note and fixative in perfumes, soaps and cosmetics.

Arizone International supplies Amyris Oil for fragrance houses, soap and candle makers, cosmetic manufacturers and aromatherapy brands.

About Amyris

Amyris balsamifera is a small evergreen tree of the citrus family (Rutaceae). Its wood is so rich in resin and oil that it burns easily, and in the Caribbean the wood was once used as torches, giving it the nickname "candlewood" or "torchwood". Haiti is the main producer of amyris oil. The wood is chipped, dried and steam distilled to produce a pale yellow, slightly viscous oil.

Not True Sandalwood

Despite the name "West Indian sandalwood", amyris is a different plant from Indian sandalwood (Santalum album). Its scent is milder, drier and less creamy, but it shares a warm, woody character. Because true sandalwood oil is rare and expensive, perfumers often use amyris as a blending partner or partial substitute to add woody depth and fix other notes.

Aroma and Composition

  • Valerianol and ElemolSesquiterpene alcohols responsible for the soft, woody character.
  • Beta-Eudesmol and Other SesquiterpenesAdding balsamic depth.
  • Low VolatilityMakes it an effective fixative that slows the evaporation of lighter notes.

Applications

  • Perfumes, attars and fragrance compounds as a woody base note
  • Soaps, where it helps fix the fragrance
  • Candles, incense and home fragrance
  • Men's grooming products and aftershaves
  • Aromatherapy blends for relaxation
  • Massage and body oils in diluted form

Blending Tips

Amyris blends well with sandalwood, cedarwood, vetiver, patchouli, lavender, rose, ylang-ylang and citrus oils. It is often used to extend and support more costly woody and floral oils in a formula.

Sustainability

Amyris trees grow slowly, and responsible harvesting is important for long-term supply. We work with suppliers who follow sustainable sourcing practices where possible.

Safety and Dilution

Amyris Oil is generally regarded as mild, but like all essential oils it should be diluted before skin use and used in line with IFRA standards and local regulations. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children. Not for internal use.

Quality Parameters

  • Botanical identity (Amyris balsamifera)
  • Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation
  • Gas chromatography profile
  • Colour and aroma evaluation
  • Screening for adulteration with cheaper oils or solvents

Packaging and Storage

Supplied in aluminium bottles, HDPE containers or lacquered drums, from small samples to bulk. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place. Amyris thickens slightly over time, which is normal.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators

Amyris is a good way to extend costly sandalwood in soaps and body care: try replacing part of the sandalwood with amyris and test the blend over two to three days, because its woody note develops slowly on the skin. Amyris also thickens with age, so warm cold stock before pouring.

Compliance

ISO 22000:2018 GMP FSSAI HACCP

No. Amyris Oil comes from Amyris balsamifera, a Caribbean tree of the citrus family. It is often called West Indian sandalwood because of its woody scent, but it is milder and drier than true sandalwood.

Most amyris oil is produced in Haiti, where the wood and sawdust of the tree are steam distilled into a pale yellow, slightly thick oil.

Amyris evaporates slowly, so it works as an affordable woody base note and fixative. It helps lighter notes last longer and can support more costly woods like sandalwood in a blend.

Yes. Each batch of Amyris Oil can be supplied with a GC-MS report along with the COA, so you can check its main components.
